All Quiet on the Western Front: The surprise Bafta-winner that could ... (Stuff.co.nz)

REVIEW: Nominated for nine Academy Awards, this is a haunting, harrowing adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's more than 90-year-old novel.

A scene with Bäumer trapped in a muddy hole with a soldier from the other side is both disquieting and entrancing, a desperate struggle for survival followed by deep regret. Germany’s entry for Best International Feature at next year’s Academy Awards, this is should now be considered the category frontrunner. That same heady combination of visceral horrors and disquieting, often dissonant, audio accompaniment is at the heart of a stunning new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s more than 90-year-old novel All Quiet on the Western Front. As punishment, Bäumer is put on night watch, rapidly learning the ropes the hard way. Compelling and heartbreaking at the same time, it was a coming-of-age story that featured searing imagery and an amazingly atmospheric soundtrack (that somehow mixed the anachronistic electronica of Jean Michel-Jarre and Tomaso Albinoni’s haunting Adagio in G-Minor to magnificent effect). “You won’t survive until dawn Paul Bäumer,” his superior barks at him, after witnessing his young charge flailing around with his gas mask.

Netflix's All Quiet on the Western Front takes home Bafta's top prize ... (Stuff.co.nz)

New Zealand's wizards of Wellington won the visual effects gong, while an anti-war German drama received seven prizes, including Best Picture.

A visceral depiction of life and death in the World War I trenches, All Quiet was nominated for 14 awards. Many wore blue ribbons in support of refugees and displaced people. We are particularly delighted with the response our work on The Way of Water has been received from the public, critics and peers alike” Wētā FX Executive VFX Producer David Conley said after the Bafta win, which followed nine gongs that the Wellington-based company brought home from the Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards last Thursday. Helen Mirren paid tribute to William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September. It has British funding, and McDonagh was born in Britain to Irish parents. Will All Quiet on the Western Front win best picture Oscar? (BBC News)

Netflix's WW1 film swept the Baftas to become a frontrunner for best picture at this year's Oscars. It's both an unlikely – and predictable – turn of events ...

[the country's critics have slated the film](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jan/27/oscar-all-quiet-on-the-western-front-germany-critics), and one key theme of their damning reviews is that Berger has a severe case of "Oscar-Geilheit" or "lust for an Oscar". [Coda](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20210809-coda-and-the-films-finally-treating-deaf-people-with-respect)), a semi-improvised docudrama ( [Nomadland)](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20200914-nomadland-review-overflowing-with-humanity-and-tenderness), a poetic meditation on race and sexuality ( [Moonlight](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20160915-film-review-moonlight-is-what-festivals-were-made-for)), and so on. The director didn't even make a legitimate adaptation of the novel, argues Hubert Wetzel [in Süddeutsche Zeitung](https://www.sueddeutsche.de/kultur/im-westen-nichts-neues-netflix-roman-1.5683370). It might be German, but in many respects, it is the most obvious best picture nominee of the lot. There was a time, in the 1990s and 2000s, when everyone knew what an "Oscar movie" was. In other words, they watched the kind of film that used to win best picture on a regular basis. [Top Gun: Maverick](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20220512-top-gun-maverick-hits-its-target-with-explosive-force) was a commercial and critical smash, so that was always a shoo-in, too. And they watched a film whose scenes of death, destruction and misery resonated with reports from the invasion of Ukraine. As well as funding All Quiet on the Western Front, Netflix has done an exemplary job of promoting it, ensuring that it is hard to log on to the platform without being reminded of its existence. But the new rule has led to more unusual films appearing in the best picture line-up – and more films that aren't in English, too. The film is adapted from a first-person, present-tense account of a German soldier's dehumanising ordeal in the trenches. [The Fabelmans](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20221118-spielbergs-the-fabelmans-review-an-emotional-crowd-pleaser) is the venerable Steven Spielberg's love letter to cinema, for instance, so that was a dead cert.
