Pancakes and football: a brief history of Shrove Tuesday in the UK (The Conversation UK)

But Shrove Tuesday isn't just about pancakes. Indeed, historically in the UK, it formed part of a more elaborate pre-Lent festival called Shrovetide, which was ...

By the middle of the 18th century, officially sanctioned Shrovetide ball games were mostly confined to smaller market towns and villages, which is where some live on to this day. Participation and patronage of the game These harsh consequences reflect the worth of Shrove Tuesday football to these communities. On Shrove Tuesday 1373, for example, skinners (who skins animals) and tailors played in the streets of London. Craftsmen and guilds played key roles as participants and providers of the ball(s). Shop windows are [boarded up and businesses are closed](https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/local-news/rules-ashbourne-royal-shrovetide-players-8151777) for the day as whole towns take to the streets to join in the annual Shrovetide football game. Under the mayor’s supervision, the Drapers tossed up the balls (which doubled as prizes) for the craftsmen and crowd to play from the common field to the city’s Common Hall. Local governments would gather the “wedding ball” dues, hire drummers and pipers to pump up the crowds, or pay for the footballs directly. [football often fell foul](https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.3138/9781442654044-013/html?lang=en) of authority and was banned outright. These were part of a broader folk tradition, where newly married couples owed a “bride ball” or “ball money” to their community. Medieval royal prohibitions called it “vain, unthrifty and idle”, while [Puritans deemed it](https://theconversation.com/bites-brawls-and-severed-heads-footballs-history-of-violence-28429) “a bloody and murdering practise”. Celebrated in many countries around the world, for Christians, Shrove Tuesday marks the last day, or the feast day before Lent - the 40 days leading up to Easter.

Why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? (Manchester Evening News)

The tradition, celebrated by households across the country, is part of a Christian holiday.

The 40-day period of Lent is traditionally observed as a period of self-discipline and people tend to give up a bad habit or vice until Easter begins. People tend to give up sweet treats for Lent, so eating pancakes is a way of indulging before going without. Easter then marks the Resurrection of Jesus three days after his death by crucifixion. Some communities even choose to host a pancake race where people race each other while holding frying pans with pancakes in them. The price of Oil has bumped higher and trades this morning with a $77 handle, while bonds are breathing a sigh of relief after a very busy week, last that is… if I were a Fed head, and I read this letter, I would be embarrassed that the Mexico, is going about fighting inflation the right way, and I’m not… And the rising yields in bonds that began early last week, kept going strong, and the 10-year Treasury ended the week with a 3.85% yield. That has the been the story of Feb… As far as Gold, goes, the recent price decline, as with Silver also, is proving to be a buying opportunity… [Silver](https://www.fxstreet.com/rates-charts/xagusd) actually gained on the day, up 16-cents on Friday, to close the week at $21.81… And it all began that day when the PPT decided that the dollar had last too much, and the price manipulators decided that Gold has reached too high….

The pagan roots of Pancake Day (Sky HISTORY)

Scientists believe the first pancakes were made approximately 30000 years ago.

Instead of representing the sun, the pancake became the perfect food on which to gorge and overindulge before Lent. Symbolism was an important part of ancient paganism and this is where the pancake reappears. The charcoal and wheat combo might suggest he consumed the food in the form of a pancake cooked over a fire. The principles of the day are the same, an opportunity to eat plenty of fatty foods before making sacrifices for Lent. In France and other parts of the world, Pancake Day is known as Mardi Gras, which translates as 'Fat Tuesday'. Just like many of our other Christian-themed annual holidays and celebrations, the roots of Pancake Day lie in pre-Christian pagan times.

And that might be good for all of us. And that’s all he’s doing; nothing the world thinks important, economic or productive. Well, let’s stick with the pancakes for a moment.
