A guide to Ash Wednesday and Lent - Daily Leader (Dailyleader)

Lent begins 46 days prior to Easter Sunday. The 40-day season — not counting Sundays — is marked by repentance, fasting, reflection and ultimately celebration.

After a period of personal confession and prayer, the congregation is invited to receive the ashes on their foreheads, administered by the priest or pastor in the shape of a cross. The mood of the service is typically solemn, with long periods of silence and reflection. But many may not know what Ash Wednesday is, and why Lincoln County residents may be seen with ash on their foreheads in the shape of a cross.

While it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, Ash Wednesday is one of two universal days of fasting and abstinence from meat (the other day is Good Friday). No, Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Spending time in quiet reflection is always a good way to open one’s self to the Holy Spirit, at work in and through this sacramental rite. Sacramentals are objects or actions that are set apart or blessed by the Church in order to prepare us to receive grace and dispose us to cooperate with it. This symbolic action creates a visible and tangible link between the season of Lent, and its purpose in preparing us for the commemoration of the passion and death of Christ, and our celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. In the early centuries of the Church, when penance was a very public act, penitents were sprinkled with ashes to identify to the community as someone who was doing penance.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, an important time for Catholics and Christians leading up to Easter.

"Say yes to other things that are that are important, whether it's serving others, engaging in prayer or what have you." Johnston calls Lent a "period of purification and enlightenment." On Ash Wednesday, worshipers are also supposed to fast, allowing themselves to have one meal during the day. It may appear odd, but it is a mark people that practice Catholicism, as well as Christianity, receive at mass on Ash Wednesday, one of the "most popular and important holy days" in the religion. Ash Wednesday is always six and a half weeks before Easter. After a person receives their ashes, they aren't required to leave it on or take it off following Mass, but people typically leave them on for the rest of the day.

What is Lent? Lent represents the 40 days Jesus wandered the desert praying and fasting after he was baptized. It is a period of reflection, prayer and penance.

Meat isn't the only thing you can give up for Lent. Lent ends on Holy Thursday, which is April 6, when there is a Mass to represent Jesus' last supper. Sundays during Lent are not "prescribed days" of fasting and abstinence, so those don't count. The ashes also represent penance – sackcloth and ashes. The ashes represent two Biblical themes. In this small act of devotion, I give myself over to the ministrations of a church that, for all her faults and for all my doubts, I earnestly believe will still be standing at the end of time. By reminding me what I am — mortal dust — it puts me back among the pilgrim souls on Earth, elementally sane, pondering and wandering toward redemption. Mental health depends on freeing the mind of delusions and asserting the will while disavowing repression and excessive guilt. While religion and psychology are often portrayed as being at odds, most psychologists have little to say about the eternal destiny of our souls and more to say about our families of origin and what vulnerabilities we might pass along to our children. But the therapeutic focus is more on the sinner’s own suffering than on moral righteousness. Which is why I usually find myself in church on Ash Wednesday, even if I don’t go on Easter or Christmas.

We like to see Jesus as the liberator, the fighter against injustice, and he is, but that is not the dominant theme in the Gospels. I was too young to know the word "solipsistic" but I would come to recognize later that this focus on what we do, instead of what God does, is a hallmark, perhaps the hallmark, of late 20th- and early 21st-century spirituality. But there is something to what Paul said to us at Mass a couple of weeks back: "When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom. It speaks to our yearning to grow closer to Jesus Christ and him crucified, mindful that he alone can conquer sin and death, that he has in fact already conquered sin and death. I would learn that the vow of poverty is every bit as important as the vows of chastity and of obedience, and that all three were intermingled in Christ in a way that actually freed him and therefore freed those who choose to follow him most radically. I would recognize that Joel Osteen and his "prosperity Gospel" is the most fraudulent expression of Christianity since Gnosticism. And we sense that the transcendent God of the universe is very close to us, especially when we repent. The people of God know we need to repent. When I was growing up, our CCD teacher one year told us that instead of giving something up for Lent, we were going to do something positive. Today is Ash Wednesday, arguably the most distinctively Catholic day of the year. Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, but it always draws larger crowds than any celebrations, save Christmas and Easter. Sometime in the first few centuries, it got extended to 40 days, but there was a lot of variation about which 40 days. Later, it was adopted by people doing voluntary Lenten penance, too, and the connection between receiving ashes and starting a Lenten fast became so strong that it made it into the name - Feria Quarta Cinerum, meaning Ash Wednesday. It became normal practice for Christians, at least in the West, to receive ashes at the start of Lent as a sign of penitence. Receiving ashes at the start of Lent became part of public penance, helping to identify penitents. Mordecai and the Jews fasted, wearing sackcloth and ashes, when they heard of the plot against them ( [Esther 4:1-3](https://www.esv.org/verses/Esther%204%3A1-3/)). We still use the biblical phrase “sackcloth and ashes” to describe extreme remorse or guilt.

Ash Wednesday reminds us that grief is necessary—and healing (America Magazine)

A Reflection for Ash Wednesday, by Sam Sawyer, S.J..

We tell the truth about ourselves and about the world: that we have sinned and are in need of mercy. We know, because God has mercy on us, that “now is the day of salvation”; we know that our “Father who sees in secret” will make our prayer, fasting and almsgiving fruitful. There was the year my folks hid an Easter basket in the dryer and it took us hours to find it. Grief cries out in response to and even against the death that sin brings into the world, saying “This is not what we are made for.” Grief refuses to justify the victory of sin and death, even while confessing—and this is where it can open us to healing—that we have no power of our own to overcome them. Grief responds to the world being broken by sin, and to human beings suffering under the weight of sin, both as victims and as perpetrators of harm. There’s an extravagance to it—rend your hearts—that seems both attractive and overwhelming at the same time.

Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance of sin, symbolized by the ashes, a tradition with roots in the Biblical age. Fasting is a means of preparation and cleansing. It is celebrated predominantly by Catholics, but Christians of other denominations such as Lutherans and Methodists participate as well. Those who observe Ash Wednesday attend a church service, where the ashes are put on their forehead in the shape of a cross.

“Today we will receive ashes on our foreheads as a reminder that life is fleeting and fragile,” the A.I. At first, I got exactly what I expected: “In this solemn season of prayer and reflection that culminates with Easter Sunday,” the A.I. When I asked the A.I. wrote, “it is important for us to reflect on the reality of Hell—both what it means for us as individuals, and how our faith can guide us away from its embrace.” Heck yeah, artificial intelligence. “Write a 5-7 minute homily for a Catholic Ash Wednesday Mass on Hell,” I prompted the A.I. (This homily, which came in response to the prompt, “Write a 5-7 minute homily for a Catholic Ash Wednesday Mass about joy,” was generated in less than a minute.) But we haven’t heard yet much about its capacity to preach. Today, many Catholic homilists would say the more inclusive “humanity” rather than “mankind.” Likewise, every Catholic homily ended with a reiteration of what had been said, as though the A.I. Is Ash Wednesday Unbiblical? (Catholic Answers)

Doesn't Jesus say to fast in secret? So why do Catholics wear ashes on Ash Wednesday and let everyone know they're fasting during Lent?

Likewise, Jesus says we should fast in secret to emphasize that we should not fast in order to receive praise from other people, not that our fasting should be done only in secret. Protestant scholar Craig Evans connects this kind of Pharisee to Jesus’ warning about those who “disfigure” themselves to show they are fasting (Matthew, 139). for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes” (Matt. Instead, Jesus criticizes people who engage in exaggerated behaviors, who “disfigure” themselves, in order to draw attention to their fasting, or even to fabricate it. The criticism about Jesus’ disciples may have been related to the fact that they did not keep certain optional fasts that were popular among groups like the Pharisees (who may have fasted twice a week, as Luke 18:12 suggests). Matthew says Jesus “began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.” Jesus then thunders at them, “Woe to you, Chorazin! Ashes are instead a genuine sign of internal repentance and recognition that the wearer of the ashes comes from dust, and to dust he shall return (Gen. (Luke probably mentions this when he refers to “the fast” in Acts 27:9.) But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you (Matt.
