The Pogues return for a wild ride that mostly leans into the Netflix show's strengths and builds to a wild conclusion. Outer Banks Season 3 premieres Feb.
Perhaps even more fanatical than Singh, John B's dad, Big John Routledge ( [Charles Halford](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/charles-halford/3030111571/)) is back after his big surprise reveal at the end of Season 2 and eager for himself and his son to take El Dorado for themselves. The chemistry between the core characters is as fun and believable as ever, which is why it's a downer to see them split up so much throughout Season 3; John B, especially, is off with his father for big swaths of the story. It also doesn't help that he's being compared to Ward Cameron, who is just a great classic soap opera villain through and through, one whose personal relationship with our heroes makes their interactions all the more compelling. The teen angst is fun and necessary for the emotional high points to really hit, but each season's insane, not-in-any-way-plausible adventure plot is what makes Outer Banks so appealing. There's a similar issue with the villains of the show this season. But with each passing season, Outer Banks has begun to set itself apart from other teen shows by leaning into the adventure. [Chase Stokes](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/chase-stokes/3030872688/)), Sarah ( [Madelyn Cline](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/madelyn-cline/3030645833/)), Kiara ( [Madison Bailey](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/madison-bailey/3000866637/)), Pope ( [Jonathan Daviss](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/jonathan-daviss/3030663555/)), JJ ( [Rudy Pankow](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/rudy-pankow/3000847137/)), and newbie to the core group Cleo ( [Carlacia Grant](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/carlacia-grant/3000655197/)) — are stranded on an island in the Caribbean after their latest showdown with perfect soap opera villain, and Sarah's dad, Ward Cameron ( [Charles Esten](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/charles-esten/3030169931/)), went awry once again. Obviously, Ward and Rafe are back for their own special brand of shenanigans (as well as their own father-and-son side angst), and we're also introduced to a new outside villain this season, Carlos Singh ( Outer Banks is a show that knows exactly what it is, and it commits. I don't want to reveal too many plot details here since half the fun of Outer Banks is watching the big, confident swings the creative team takes in order to get from point A to point B. "Awry" here obviously means that on top of the hundreds of millions of dollars in gold that Ward and his son, everybody's favorite psycho Rafe ( [Drew Starkey](https://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/drew-starkey/3030338133/)), stole from them previously, the Camerons also took the 8-foot gold Cross of Santo Domingo, a priceless relic tied to Pope's ancestors. It is ridiculous on so many levels, and that is why I love it.
The latest adventures of the Pogues in Netflix's Outer Banks are bigger, ballsier, and, yes, badder.
[Tiger King](https://www.avclub.com/tv/reviews/tiger-king-2020) levels of TV quality. (Spoiler alert: After being presumed dead for months, John B’s dad was revealed to be alive and living in Barbados in that cliffhanger season-two finale.) There are even more Pogues, with the gang involving Bahamian teen Cleo (Carlacia Grant) and Sarah’s ex-boyfriend Topper (Austin North) in their ill-advised schemes. But you’d be wrong: Netflix announced a season four pick-up of the adventure series on February 18 at a Poguelandia fan event in Huntington Beach, California, five days ahead of the debut of this third season. [Outer Banks](https://www.avclub.com/tv/reviews/outer-banks-2020), premiering on February 23, think again. It also must be noted that the debut season aired in April 2020, when the pandemic prompted a level of patience that allowed audiences to tolerate When a seaplane turns up, the kiddos think they’re being miraculously rescued, only to find out that the aircraft is being piloted by one of Ward’s cronies, leading to a midair fight, a Sully-style crash landing, and a chase scene starring gun-toting guys on ATVs.

“I think John B is just a kid struggling to find consistency in his life and hoping that he finds it,” Stokes told The Maroon when asked about his character’s motivations. Outer Banks has never been, and continues not to be, a show one watches for the nuance; it is filmed largely in dramatic close-ups, intercut with shaky-cam action, and seems to contain at least one long flashback scene and a couple of etiolated monologues per episode. A fine cast—Pankow as JJ and Charles Esten as Ward in particular— are on the verge of having their characters betrayed by the script, only to be rescued by the season’s final two episodes. There’s almost no exploration of the contrast between life on the Outer Banks and on the protagonists’ island paradise, Poguelandia. The Chicago Maroon spoke with Outer Banks (OBX) stars Chase Stokes (John B) and Rudy Pankow (JJ) about the future of the hit show and the challenges of maintaining OBX’s relatability amid an increasingly chaotic plot. The first season of OBX spent most of its time in the titular Outer Banks of North Carolina, where the Pogues (working class teenagers John B, JJ, and Pope, plus their friends Kiara and Sarah) both argued and and physically fought with the islands’ kooks, (wealthy resident teens Kelce, Topper, and Sarah’s brother Rafe).

A sunken ship! A holy cross! Fake marriage! Faked deaths! Let's refresh your memory ahead of the Netflix hit's next chapter. By Lauren Puckett-Pope Published: ...
But season 2 has one last surprise in store: In the last moments of the finale, the camera pans to reveal John B.’s father is still alive, and he’s in cahoots with Limbrey. But that puts a target on Rafe’s back, and so Ward takes the blame for the death of both John B.’s dad and Sheriff Peterkin. The Pogues stow away on the boat to save Sarah (and, let’s be honest, the cross). Their reunion doesn’t last long, as Sarah can’t keep away from the Pogue life, and through another tangle of unessential details, the whole crew comes together to discover the Cross of Santo Domingo in the ceiling of an old church. After finding Rafe’s fingerprints on the gun the Pogues secured earlier in the season—took them long enough—the police let John B. At the end of season 1, Pogue (poor) and Kook (rich) lovers John B. The Pogues still need the assistance of a sick woman named Carla Limbrey (Elizabeth Mitchell) to prove Rafe’s the murderer. Naturally, he finds it with minimal excavation, and he and Kiara slip Limbrey a fake key so they get some more time with the real one. Of course, that’s only if the artifact actually holds the so-called Garment of the Savior, rumored to be capable of healing the sick, Jesus-style. And so as season 3 lands on Netflix, it’s useful to revisit a few of the key turning points of seasons 1 and 2. But it might ease your anxiety just enough to settle back into the lovely, blurry haze of the adventure. Trying to remember what, precisely, led the so-called Pogues down the road to El Dorado—yes, literally, that’s the end goal of season 3—is a bit like recalling equations from a math test taken under the influence.
Outer Banks Season 3 proves even the most trashy of television shows can go from being ridiculous fun to just plain trash.
When we get informed of a story of a test that must be passed and one of the characters remarks that there is always such a barrier to reaching their goal, they might as well have been referring to the path of the show itself. As long as there are more seasons to come, there will always be a need for Outer Banks to keep playing it safe so that the characters will be able to continue almost discovering something significant before the story falls back into the vacuous hole it won't dig out of. Even when there is a shootout on the water, it is so clumsily staged that it feels almost like a joke. In this journey, he encounters some of the more violent elements of the show thus far, which could be a sign of the story going into some darker territory. It is a rather awkward start that is meant to be the moment that gets us hooked for the road ahead, but it proves to be fortuitous in how everything in Season 3 doesn’t ever uncover any fun either. After they find their way back, the narrative itself remains a wandering one where a lot is going on, with little of it actually feeling like it matters.

Class-warfare treasure-hunting YA series from Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke has gotten too big for its britches.
Somehow, the presence of a thousand hands for hire, constant street chases and shootouts aren’t enough to make the hour-long episodes go faster. Season Three of Outer Banks relies heavily on narration and flashbacks to keep its momentum going, a party trick that does little to hide its thin plot. It’s a pity, then, that Season Three sacrifices nearly all of the show’s original charm to keep its already-unbelievable treasure hunt theme going just a little while longer. Rutledge (Chase Stokes) and his friends Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and JJ (Rudy Pankow), known as the Pogues (a play on “pogies,” a type of small fish). By sheer luck, and the intervention of Jamaican newcomer Cleo (Carlacia Grant), the friends got out of enemy hands and became stranded on a desert island nicknamed Poguelandia. 23 — opens with the Pogues cheerfully enjoying their tropical paradise, it quickly leaves the island behind, sending the intrepid teens on the run (once again) in a last-ditch attempt to find their fortune and maybe stay alive in the process.

Outer Banks is always best when it lets its young leads team up to hunt for treasure and take down a bad guy or two, and that’s when the series succeeds. Even with Singh’s boring baddie, Season 3 kicks off with a bang and for the most part, commits to this momentum – except for when it separates the Pogues.
