Heads accused of 'throwing colleagues under a bus' by naming ... (The Guardian)

Unions and fellow headteachers have condemned school leaders who have 'named and shamed' teachers for striking.

The head of a primary academy in the north of England, who also asked to remain anonymous, said: “I’ve seen school leaders actively naming and blaming their staff in letters. Cuts have impacted on our classrooms and I had to make a stand.” He warned that this might backfire, with teachers unwilling to take a job or stay at schools that did not support strikers. As teachers across the country prepare to strike again this week, local union branches are reminding any staff who are being pressured by unsupportive heads or trust chief executives that they do not have to declare whether they are striking in advance. He said: “I can’t stand by and watch education funding being cut, children being made more vulnerable and being taught by staff without the right qualifications due to teacher shortages. Why would you throw colleagues under a bus, knowing that if you name teachers they will be dragged through social media by some parents?”

State task force recommends better pay, more resources to fix Texas ... (HPPR)

The 46-member committee's report found compensation, training and better working conditions were key in helping Texas retain and hire teachers.

In response the committee proposed increasing access to counselors and other support for teachers and staff. “All that leaves us very little time to actually plan and prep activities for the kids. The report also stressed an emphasis on improving access to high-quality instructional materials, which would reduce the time teachers spend searching for materials on their own. “[The task force’s] recommendations will help ensure that best practices and resources are available for teacher recruitment and retention. Texas has approximately 30,000 first and second-year teachers statewide annually,” the report states. They described the program as a “clinical training/ co-teaching experience in a public PK-12 classroom” that lasts for a year, during which the trainees are paired with experienced teachers. “Salaries have not kept up with recent inflation, and pay disparities continue to exist across the state,” the authors wrote. Because of that, an emphasis needs to be placed on compensation and pay disparity, according to the study’s findings. The current minimum salary is just below $34,000 and only increases by about $10,000 a year after 10 years of experience. Greg Abbott to address the state’s teacher shortage. Over its first three years, the MPA has supported about 3,300 beginning teachers. To better train new teachers, including the estimated 40 % who lacked certification or received alternative certification training, the report’s authors found Texas should create a residency program for teachers that would also positively impact student learning.

Texas' teacher shortage task force calls for pay raises, more training (Texas Tribune)

The task force recommends that the Legislature fund a study of how teachers use their time to better understand their duties and how to streamline them. Administrators should also redesign their district’s schedule to allow teachers more time for planning and development, the task force said. In a task force survey, teachers said that an unsustainable workload is the No. School administrators should also receive training on best discipline practices and how to foster a positive learning environment. The task force recommended expanding mentorship programs for teachers and helping them take more leadership roles. [Donna Howard](https://www.texastribune.org/directory/donna-howard/), D-Austin, filed [House Bill 882](https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/billtext/pdf/HB00882I.pdf#navpanes=0), which would increase the basic allotment per student to $7,075 and would adjust it annually according to inflation. The group recommends expanding programs and pathways for high school students wanting to become teachers. The job of the task force — a mix of educators and school administrators — was to investigate why these shortages exist, recommend policy changes to the TEA and consider more flexibility in the teacher certification process. At the same time, schools have become the center of the state’s culture wars, and teachers are caught in the crossfire. While many school districts already pay more than the minimum salary, teachers at small and rural school districts earn the minimum amount or slightly more. "What we've been hearing from members and educators across the state is this lack of respect." Abbott said lawmakers are ready to have the report guide them as they work on improving the teaching profession in the state.

The Benefits of Teacher Looping (Montpelier High School)

Moving up a grade together can benefit both teachers and students. By Kate Rix. |. Feb. 24, 2023.

Interestingly, Papay notes, the Tennessee study didn’t just find academic and behavioral benefits for students who had the same teacher for multiple years. “Teachers have a limited amount of time and energy,” says researcher Wedenoja. And in some schools, teachers must shift physical classrooms with each grade level, even if the students are the same. In the Tennessee study, for example, most students who had teachers for multiple years had them in middle or “Looping is about developing relationships and consistency for kids, especially when there are a lot of other changes going on,” Lyman says. Students in their second year with the same teacher typically learn over one-third more content than students in the same grade who had different teachers, DeBerry says. Lyman says that having the same core teachers both years is part of an effort to avoid any additional transitions. “For students who don’t develop as fast, teachers have longer with them to reach goals.” Now, at the end of every school year, she offers teachers the opportunity to stay with their class for a second year, and many do so. But they get to know their students better, which can lead to more job satisfaction and academic gains for students. When teachers have more time with students, they get to know them better and can teach them more effectively.
