FA Cup preview: Can Grimsby Town become latest giant slayers? (Sportsnet.ca)

Old Trafford has served as a fortress in the FA Cup over the years. The fifth round has been a major obstacle for Burnley over the years — the Clarets have lost each of their last six fifth-round matches and haven’t advanced to the quarterfinals since the 2002-03 campaign. Son Heung-min has been the Spurs’ go-to man in the FA Cup. These clubs last clashed in the FA Cup during the 2004-05 tournament when Paul Dickov scored in a 1-0 win in the quarterfinals. John Molinaro is one of the leading soccer journalists in Canada, having covered the game for over 20 years for several media outlets, including Sportsnet, CBC Sports and Sun Media. All eyes will be on the fourth division’s Grimsby Town, the lowest-ranked team remaining in this season’s FA Cup, when they play away to the Premier League’s Southampton at St. ET) in what will only be the second FA Cup meeting between the two clubs. Man City have won each of their previous 12 FA Cup contests against lower division clubs by a combined score of 42-8. West Ham’s previous win came in 2001 courtesy of a goal from Paolo Di Canio. Even though Brighton plays in a higher division at the moment, it hasn’t had much success against Stoke over the years. If a game is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to extra time and then a penalty shootout (if necessary) to determine the winner. 28 to March 1, features eight matches in total, including Premier League side Southampton hosting lowly Grimsby Town, who compete in the English fourth division.

The last team to do so was Wycombe in 2001. The manager has a lot of experience and did really well at Leicester and Watford. Grimsby have real hope of a scalp. The FA Cup represents the latest chance to progress in a competition against a West Ham side looking to end their own barren silverware run. That could well mean a first start for Solomon, but the Israeli could benefit further from having the club's talisman back alongside him. That's why we are going to fly there tomorrow - to do a good game and go through.

He remains as much of a legend at the Abbey Stadium as he is at City. Leivers almost missed the FA Cup final against Birmingham City. ‘Too far away,’ he says, unequivocally, on the idea of a move to Tyneside. Then, the director discreetly slipped into his hand a packet of Polos. One of City’s directors stepped into the players’ carriage and summoned Leivers. Glenn has heard them many times over, including one from a train ride home after he had captained the side to victory at Newcastle.

Bristol City v Manchester City: FA Cup fifth round – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Join Scott Murray for updates from under the lights at Ashton Gate.

“It’ll be 2-1 to BCFC, with the winner in the 94th minute, while the Mancunians are preoccupied with booking limos to their Gulfstreams at Lulsgate is my prediction.” We’ll be off in a couple of minutes. It’s a cute run, and though he’s crowded out, the ball twangs out of play for a corner on the left. [Manchester City](https://www.theguardian.com/football/manchestercity) pass down the left nearly releases Foden into the box. Lewis comes across and eases him off the ball and to the ground. O’Leary comes to the edge of his area to claim. O’Leary is beaten, buy Kalas heads off the line at the expense of a corner. 33 min: De Bruyne cuts in from the left and blooters a wild effort high and wide from distance. De Bruyne takes too long over what to do next, and the momentum of the attack is jiggered. 35 min: Kalas strips a snoozing De Bruyne in the centre circle and sets Bell off down the left. De Bruyne enters the box and flashes a shot over the bar. Dias attempts to sweep home from ten yards, only for Pring to throw himself in the road and take the sting out of the shot. The ball’s swung back in from the left.

Some of the best FA Cup moments in history have occurred under ... (The Guardian)

In today's Football Daily: Midweek FA Cup magic, Nigel Pearson and more.

A few years back when I worked for a well known parcel delivery company, I was tasked with a special journey to deliver a parcel to the home of Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva. I tried to use the excuse of it being cold outside to said player but even though he didn’t seem to fall for it he still laughed it off” – Pete Cody. “There is a part of me that realises I’m not the easiest to work with at times … I wasn’t actually aware of the recipient’s name until after I got strangely selected by my boss to carry out this task. I’m a lot more thoughtful than I’ve been in the past and able to look at things in a different way. That’s if Pep’s performance in the pre-match press conference is anything to go by, given he spent most of it going out of his way to patronise Manchester United in the wake of their League Cup glory. The place: Annfield Park, Stirling, for a local derby between the mighty Albion and Stenhousemuir. Similar excitement this time is surely not beyond the realms, given that Bristol City are on a run of 12 matches without defeat, while Manchester City go into the game with one eye on the title race, the other on that elusive Big Cup. The Robins surprisingly have the historical upper hand over the Citizens, 10-9 up in wins, and although they’ve lost all of the last four meetings, a sequence that stretches back to 1980, they gave Pep Guardiola’s side a run for their money in the 2018 Coca-Cola Cup semis. So let’s embrace this new-fangled state of affairs, which you may as well do as it’s surely here to stay now, or at least until the FA Cup is abolished in 2031 by decree of all four members of the new streamlined Premier League (Newcastle Football Concern, Consolidated Mancunian, London Weekend and PSG). The plum tie of the fifth round – in the old-fashioned sense of having potential shock value, as opposed to the modern one of being exactly the same sort of fixture you get week in, week out on Sky – is relegation-haunted Saints versus fourth-tier Grimsby. Let’s be honest, most of the best FA Cup moments in history occurred under lights in the middle of the week anyway.

Who will win the FA Cup? Odds and predictions for Man City, Man ... (Sporting News)

The "magic" of the FA Cup is alive and well, and upsets are part of the fabric of the competition, but a "Big Six" club has won the competition all but four ...

They've already knocked out Bournemouth from the FA Cup, and they performed admirably against Manchester United in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, defeated 2-0 in a game they out-shot their Premier League opponents 11-10 but struggled to finish chances. And for knockout competition, they don't have to beat Premier League sides over the course of a long season, but instead just a few games where anything can happen. While City this season have not yet shown they can consistently win on days they don't have their best, they are still one of the best sides in the league. It has been 43 years since a team from the lower divisions won the FA Cup, but if there's ever a chance for that to happen, it's now. In the 2023 competition, which has reached the Round of 16, all that could change. In fact, a lower-tier club has not won the FA Cup since West Ham in 1980.

Fulham v Leeds: FA Cup fifth round – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Join Daniel Gallan for updates from the fifth-round tie at Craven Cottage.

74 mins: Leeds try to play the ball out from a goalkick but Pereira is quickly on to it and wins the ball back inside Leeds’ box. “This is the first time I’ve looked forward to a second half of a Leeds game since the Chelsea game back in August. Brighton are such good fun for the neutral this season, it must be brilliant to be a fan.” He picks up the piefes of a long cross and plays a swift one-two with Mitrovic and he cuts across the goal. He’s picked out by a neat through ball from Rutter (formerly referred to as Georginio) but the shot lacks power to drill past the ‘keeper. Hard to pick which is the better of the two. 76 mins: Leeds finally string a few passes together and it makes its way to Harrison on the left. Leeds might have had a penalty for a high kick inside the box. It all started with a break down the left. He puts in a ball at the near post but Koch can’t keep his effort down. Harrison is having a great spell down the left. 81 mins: That’s a chance for Koch at the near post.

Brilliant Palhinha and Solomon take Fulham past Leeds into FA Cup ... (The Guardian)

It says much for Fulham's progress under Marco Silva that they dropped their standards and still reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

The finish, a vicious curler into the far corner, was a replica of Solomon’s The Israeli swerved inside, found Mitrovic and moved on to the striker’s lay-off. The move for the clincher began when Aleksandar Mitrovic released Wilson on the right. After 14 minutes Georginio Rutter thought he had his first goal for Leeds, only for Weston McKennie to be penalised for a push on Harry Wilson. Admittedly, Fulham’s attempt to reach the last eight for the first time since 2010 began in unconvincing fashion. Gracia will know Leeds need more of an edge if they are going to stay in the Premier League.

Evan Ferguson fires Brighton into FA Cup quarter-finals with win at ... (The Guardian)

Evan Ferguson scored a first-half winner for Brighton in their 1-0 victory at Stoke to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Sarmiento’s following act was to blaze hard and Bonham’s reflexes kept the score the same, before, at the other end, Axel Tuanzebe, on his full debut, spurned a header to equalise. “I understand they want to win the trophy and we also want to win, but to win we need to work.” This was the 18-year-old Irishman’s fifth of the season and had Brighton firmly in control. His side’s second half began with a mini-bombardment of Brighton but the visitors were always too fast or strong to be breached. It was Kaoru Mitoma’s fate when thwarted as he hoped to race in, but the next time he received the ball this changed. Brighton’s class, in the end, eased them past a Stoke who were doughty and little else until a late flurry.
