Crusaders player ratings vs Highlanders | Super Rugby Pacific (RugbyPass)

Both the Crusaders and Highlanders took the field in Melbourne eager to make amends for disappointing losses in round one.

Spotted a gap and ran the perfect line to put himself over in the 48th minute. Showcased a strong kicking game, contributing well to the Crusaders’ dominance in territory. On early for an injured Jack Goodhue and injected himself well with a good kick-through and burst of pace. Stole a lineout and showed good nouse in the set piece where the Crusaders had the upper hand. As expected, Mo’unga handled much of the backfield play and Burke’s boot was rarely employed. Both men won their defensive collisions but Umaga-Jensen proved his X-factor strength had a bigger impact on the match while Havili’s limited opportunities putting boot to ball evened the scorecards. An electric run down the sideline was the piece of Richie magic we missed last week and set up Whitelock’s presence could be felt as the Crusaders put in a more typical Crusaders performance. Drummond had a poor outing in round one and improved marginally in round two. Every involvement Taylor has around the ruck is a huge positive for the Crusaders, his ability to pick it up and burst for a couple of meters gives his side forward momentum every time. Was a sure thing in the lineout and scored Collapsed in the game’s opening scrum and was uncharacteristically outmuscled in that area throughout the opening stages.

Super Rugby Pacific: Five takeaways from Crusaders v Highlanders ... (planetrugby.com)

Following the Crusaders' dominant 52-15 win over New Zealand rivals the Highlanders, Planet Rugby picks out five takeaways from the action.

Whilst Burns did have some neat touches and tried to get his team on the front foot with ball in hand, there was a lot left to be desired. Their attacking play was disjointed, and the only shining light in the performance was Thomas Umaga-Jensen who will become crucial to the team this season. Of course, it must be considered that the Highlanders did not hand the former Leicester Tiger the best platform. Granted, the side started against both of last season’s finalists, but the gap in quality is alarming. In the clash against Crusaders, the side were missing several All Blacks such as Aaron Smith and Shannon Frizell. In typical fashion, the Crusaders punished the error with a converted try. A big turnaround is needed before the season becomes longer than needed. Mo’unga may be going to Japan after the World Cup, but he is certainly a key piece of the jigsaw for the showpiece in France. [Havili](https://www.planetrugby.com/tag/david-havili/) took things into his own hands against the Highlanders and produced a blockbuster performance with a particularly good second half. 60 against the Blues last weekend and 52 today. However, like any great team under pressure, there was calmness and clarity of thought in the Crusaders’ ranks. The most debated position in the All Blacks picture ahead of the World Cup later this year is undoubtedly inside centre.
