Super Rugby Pacific: Chiefs blow away Moana Pasifika in first half ... (New Zealand Herald)

Damian McKenzie was a key figure in the Chiefs running up a 38-3 halftime lead, pulling the strings of the attack well to put teammates in space or attack a gap ...

But after the halftime break, that all changed. Moana Pasifika were rewarded for staying in the fight, and started to get some consistent time with ball in hand – finishing the game with the larger share of possession. There was little to fault in their first-half display as they made the most of Moana Pasifika being unable to find a way to keep the ball for long periods.

Chiefs score fastest-ever Super Rugby try in 52-29 win over Moana ... (Stuff.co.nz)

It took Rameka Poihipi less than nine seconds to get his side on the board, and they proved just as ruthless throughout a first-half romp.

Moana Pasifika at least came back into it to go 26-14 in a stop-start second stanza and ended up bettering the Chiefs in metres carried, defenders beaten and offloads. No real player head and shoulders above, but Stevenson can take it for his hat-trick. But prior to that, the mercurial No 10 was at his electric best. It’s hard to go past Poihipi’s early heroics. He barely would have parked himself in the coaches’ box when he had any anxiety immediately eased. *

Chiefs score fastest-ever Super try in big win over Moana Pasifika (1 News)

The Chiefs appeared to set the tone early when Rameka Poihipi crossed the line just nine seconds into the contest on his side's way to a 52-29 victory.

While their missed tackle tally had proved costly, they reined that right in to limit the Chiefs to just additional two tries, both scored by fullback Shaun Stevenson. The Chiefs proved their 31-10 round-one win over the reigning champion Crusaders was no fluke, running in six unanswered tries in the first half to set up the victory. Poihipi intercepted the first pass after the kick-off, thrown infield by Moana Pasifika winger Anzelo Tuitavuki, and the Chiefs were up 7-0 before the clock had ticked over to two minutes.

[Stevenson](https://www.planetrugby.com/tag/Shaun-Stevenson/) is one such player, and he has played well on a consistent basis for the Chiefs now for several seasons he could be a surprise inclusion in the All Blacks squad this year. After going into the sheds at half-time with a comfortable 38-3 lead, the Chiefs looked a different side in the second half, and their opponents made them pay. The 23-year-old has great potential and stood up well in his direct duel with All Blacks back-row Pita Gus Sowakula. Clayton McMillan’s troops’ intensity levels dropped, and their discipline let them down as they conceded several penalties on defence, which resulted in their opponents coming back into the match. [Christian Leali’ifano](https://www.planetrugby.com/tag/Christian-Leali'ifano/) was blown up on two occasions for not letting the ball travel over 10 metres when restarting the match. With Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett leaving New Zealand rugby following the World Cup in September, McKenzie could be the All Blacks’ first choice number 10 in 2024.
