The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series will celebrate a special milestone this weekend with the HSBC Canada Sevens in Vancouver being the 200th men's tournament ...
Over the next two years, they were joined by Scotland and Canada in adding their names to the roll of honour. Samoa threw their hat into the ring by taking the next title in 2010 and England were always a threat with record Series points scorer Ben Gollings dictating play. We take a look at how the competition has evolved. 2009 was not only a significant year for sevens in terms of it winning the vote to become an Olympic sport but it also marked the emergence of South Africa as a threat to New Zealand and Fiji, the Blitzboks claiming the first of their four Series titles that year. Fiji became Series champions for the first time in 2005-06 but it was still New Zealand who largely held the upper hand as the Series continued to grow, their run of seven consecutive tournament wins between London in 2007 to Hong Kong the following year being a record that still exists today. New Zealand went on to be crowned champions in that first tournament in Dubai following a 38-14 win over Fiji, another of the sport’s powerhouses long before the Series was initiated.
Los Teros Sevens and Canada produce stunning results at BC Place in Vancouver with victories over Fiji and Australia.
Uruguay faced Fiji in their second game, opponents they had never beaten before. Uruguay had never won at BC Place before, losing five previous encounters by an average margin of 32 points. “First game obviously was a little bit of a let down, but we moved on from there and we’re really looking forward to taking that energy into our game tomorrow,” said Percillier. Bianca Farella beat a pair of defenders in the eighth minute to score, and with a conversion from Chloe Daniels, Canada took a 7-5 lead. Women’s and men’s teams shared the turf at BC Place for the HSBC Canada Sevens for the first time on Friday, an action-packed first day of competition in Vancouver. Australia put in one final effort with a try and a conversion, but Kal Sager and Thomas Isherwood pushed through Australia’s defence to further increase Canada’s score. I feel really proud, I was here last year watching the boys, and got to go out with them this time,” said Sager, who made his debut for Canada in Hong Kong in November. Australia responded immediately to tie the game 5-5, but it was Percillier running once again down the field with a smile on his face to score and re-take the lead for Canada. The Irish had a 21-0 lead at the break, scoring another try early in the second half. Tenacity was the name of the game as Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team took on the United States in a Friday night match-up. “We really didn’t start the way that we wanted to start, and really didn’t get possession the way we wanted to, but the atmosphere out there is amazing. Canada spent the majority of the first half inside their 22, with Ilona Maher scoring first for the USA in the third minute, giving them a 5-0 lead. With a conversion from Olivia Apps, the final score was 28-7. “We really had a lot of excitement going into that game and I think the fans were great,” said Apps.

The men’s pools for Vancouver have HSBC Los Angeles winners New Zealand in Pool A alongside Cape Town champions Samoa, Spain and the United States. “Every tournament you have to take into consideration how hard the pools are because it’s been crazy at the moment when there’s nine teams who can qualify for the four Olympic spots at the end of the season. Ireland captain Harry McNulty said: “Back-to-back tournaments are always tough, and with the three-day tournament it means one less training day, but we love coming to Vancouver – it’s always a great crowd so we’re excited to push on from last week. The stakes couldn’t be higher at the bottom end of the men’s Series this season as well. The Americans join New Zealand as the only nation to have medalled at every event this season, while France picked up their first bronze medal in Sydney. “I have only seen that [New Zealand can qualify for Paris 2024] in the media and we haven’t actually talked about that as a team.

Firstly, I made the Youth Olympic team for Buenos Aires 2018, then the (Under-21) Pumitas team and the senior sevens side. “I wore his shirt all the time and if he lost I would cry. “I’ve been a mega fan of Messi since I was a kid. I will tell what’s next after Paris 2024, but for now, I’m simply having fun and enjoying rugby.” What really helped me was to think: “Ok, you are on the field for 14 minutes, but in the end this is just sport, you have a life beyond it.” I was overthinking all the time. “I had a lot of pressure to prove that I actually was the best player in the world. There were some memes comparing us and I sent them to him on Instagram. I was overthinking all the time." After that red card, the team started playing at 400% and the concentration and connection was incredible.” Being in the Olympic village, the atmosphere is amazing and to share it with other athletes is incredible. My dad asked me how we did it and I was like: 'No idea'.
Neither side conceded a point in their first pool games of the World Series tournament.

After a brace from the mighty Naya Tapper, Ireland tried to get back into the game, but fell behind by two points (19-17). The clash between USA and Ireland concluded the pool phase with the top of Pool C at stake, knowing that both teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals after their victories on the first day. On the other hand, Brazil proved their resilience by holding on in the first half and scoring in extra time. Ahead of the game against Brazil, Bianca Farella stepped onto the BC Place indoor pitch alone, marking her 45th tournament on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series; a record she celebrated by scoring one of her team's five tries. After three minutes of being held up against the blue wall, Australia managed to find the breakthrough thanks to Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea. New Zealand had a tougher time against Fiji in their 18th win in as many games against their Pacific neighbours. It was a tsunami of tries that Great Britain unleashed on the young Colombian guest team - Vancouver is only their second HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament after Atlanta 2016 - with 11 out of 12 players making their debut (captain Camila Lopera is the only veteran of the 2015-2016 season). The milestone was highlighted by tries from Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Michaela Blyde's sixth of the weekend in the first half. Against an improving Great Britain team, USA had to show great determination to win in the second quarter-final. In the first quarter-final, Australia, defending World Series champions, easily overcame Fiji (29-5) thanks to five tries, including a brace from Maddison Levi (nine so far this weekend), who leads the DHL Impact Player. New Zealand is the second team after hosts France to qualify and the first on the back of their results on the World Series this season. -
