In Ordinary Time by Carmel McMahon review – the trials of inherited ... (The Guardian)

The writer uses her own story of emigration, uncertainty and alcoholism as one thread in a wider historical tapestry.

For the most part, though, McMahon is a sure-footed and constantly thought-provoking guide as she navigates “landscapes both familiar and strange” in her often painful journey of self-discovery. Its title is taken from the Catholic liturgical calendar in which ordinary time is the periods between saints’ feast days, but its four-part structure is based on the pre-Christian festivals that marked the cyclical changing of the seasons. McMahon’s life is punctuated by other family tragedies: the death of a brother, the loss of another to prolonged mental illness. Michelle’s death occurred just three months before McMahon was born, altering for ever the atmosphere in which she and her siblings were raised: “Six more children were born in quick succession, a year or two apart, and Michelle’s name was never spoken in our house.” Often she would turn up there, she writes, with a “thrift-store trenchcoat thrown over my pyjamas, reeking of cigarettes and booze, yesterday’s makeup sliding down my face”. This hybrid book, which is not quite a memoir and not quite a conceptually linked essay collection, begins with the death of a young Irish woman called Grace Farrell, whose body was discovered outside St Brigid’s Church in Manhattan’s East Village on 20 February 2011.

In 1977, he paid just $150 for it and was able to drive it home. The Great USA Day was a big event for American vehicle enthusiasts, and participants came from as far afield as Invercargill and Christchurch as well as closer to home. Given the weather, it was a very successful day, with a high public turnout and lots of positivity, he said.

Bellincampi and musicians transport audience back in time with ... (New Zealand Herald)

The Radical, a coupling of Beethoven's last two symphonies, was a spectacular launch for Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's New Zealand Herald Premier series ...

Was Beethoven’s massive choral finale, giving out Schiller’s eternal hopes and truths, ever more relevant, on so many levels? Experiencing awe is not so easy in our contemporary world, but that state is inevitable when one submits to the visceral and cerebral power of this mammoth score. From the start, one sensed the immense joy of music director Giordano Bellincampi in carrying this project to completion, a conductor who has happily confessed that he would play Beethoven every day of his life if he could.

First-time buyers: Asking over 425k in Wellington, but this little gem ... (Stuff.co.nz)

It need a little sprucing, but this home in Newlands could be a foot on the property ladder.

The home is available for immediate possession, and conditional offers are welcome. A lick of paint throughout, and you could add immediate value to the home. The nearest train station is also at Johnsonville. Allison is in the process of getting that costed. And if you don’t fancy carting all the veg home, there’s plenty of room in the backyard to develop a decent vege patch. It turned out to be a “fab location”, he says, with easy access to the city, and giving a sense of being removed from the hustle and bustle of town when you’re at home.

The Christchurch regatta shapes up as an important event in the context of the season. While there was little cosmetic damage, the strike did plenty of damage to the electronics and hydraulics which left the boat unable to sail in Sydney last month. While wingsails across the fleet were damaged in the Sydney weather event, the Canadians’ boat was the only vessel to sustain damage.

Paeroa floodgates used during Cyclone Gabrielle for the first time ... (New Zealand Herald)

The blue flood control gates across State Highway 26 at Paeroa's Criterion Bridge, spanning 22 metres and weighing 5500 kilograms each, were installed in 2018.

I’m really proud of the level of preparedness of the crew and how smoothly it went, and the monitoring of the incoming storm, which allowed us to be ahead of the punch with closing the gates,” McGregor says. “We [even] had farmers with an interest in the pump stations... “We knew the river was going to spill, and it went really quickly. Before the floodgates were installed, the town relied on stop logs which had to be pieced together like a jigsaw by operational staff. The difference between the land riverside and land-side [was significant]. “Once closed, the water kept rising...

Harry Styles Love on Tour Auckland show: Start time, how to get ... (New Zealand Herald)

Will Harry Styles don a Bunnings hat, do a shoey or take part in New Zealand's national census when he hits the stage at Mt Smart Stadium tomorrow?

As for food, you can bring a small amount of food prepared at home, like baking, fruit or sandwiches. They will travel back to the city from the stadium after the concert finishes until midnight. But if his recent shows in Australia are anything to go by, we can guess he’ll appear on stage at about 8.40pm and play for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
