Will Sri Lanka's perfect preparation reap rewards in New Zealand? (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Will Sri Lanka's perfect preparation reap rewards in New Zealand? It may come down to how their batters fare against New Zealand's seamers in the first innings.

[Angelo Mathews](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/angelo-mathews-49764)has the best record in New Zealand. [won only two of their 19 Tests](https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;host=5;orderby=won;team=8;template=results;type=team)in New Zealand. He is coming off a decent stretch of scores too, having [made a first-class century](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/national-super-league-4-day-tournament-2022-23-1354422/galle-vs-colombo-7th-match-1354432/full-scorecard)in the first half of February. At the end of the season you sit down and have a beer and reflect on those moments. I think this pitch will get drier faster and there will be some support for the spinners from earlier in the game. But even then, India would have to lose or draw their last Test against Australia for Sri Lanka to be in contention. [In 2018](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/sri-lanka-in-nz-2018-19-1153832/new-zealand-vs-sri-lanka-2nd-test-1153839/full-scorecard), Trent Boult and Tim Southee skittled them for 104 before Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls hit big hundreds, New Zealand establishing a lead of 659 in the second innings. [Vishwa Fernando](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/vishwa-fernando-465783), [Kasun Rajitha](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/kasun-rajitha-499594), [Asitha Fernando](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/asitha-fernando-786925), and [Prabath Jayasuriya](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/prabath-jayasuriya-422871)having played 17, 13, seven, and three Tests, respectively. [Kane Williamson](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/kane-williamson-277906)will complete 1000 against Sri Lanka. [National Super League](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/national-super-league-4-day-tournament-2022-23-1354422), Sri Lanka's top first-class competition. If they are blown away, as they had been on the two previous occasions, New Zealand will likely control the game. - Mike Tyson (quote reproduced here in the original Tysonian)

Righto, that typical short ball field is on for Wagner after just one over of his. Big boundary that side and it's an easy three by the time fine leg gets around Excellent running to convert this into a three The intent has been very good and he has also produced some typically eye-catching shots. He was a bit lucky early on but has been dominating in his strokeplay as he spent more time at the crease. Trickles towards square leg

Black Caps v Sri Lanka live updates: Day one, first test (New Zealand Herald)

New Zealand (probable): 1 Tom Latham, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Henry Nicholls, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Tom Blundell (wicketkeeper), 7 Michael Bracewell, ...

The game will be broadcast and streamed live on Spark Sport and the Spark Sport app. Sri Lanka’s most recent win here, 17 years ago, came at the Basin when Lasith Malinga (5-68 and 2-62) and Mutiah Muralidaran (4-31 and 6-87) were too hard to handle along with impressive knocks by Kumar Sangakkara (156) in the first innings and a Chamara Silva (152) in the second innings led to a 217-run victory. They last played a test series here in 2018, with the first test at the Basin finishing in a draw in which Tom Latham made 264 not out, before the Black Caps won the second test in Christchurch by 423 runs, Latham made 176 and Henry Nicholls 162. Sri Lanka need to win the series 2-0 to have a chance to make the World Test Championship final at the Oval in June. Tom Latham has scored 927 runs against Sri Lanka with an average of 77.25, with four of his 13 test hundreds scored against them. The ACC will be covering every ball live on Spark Sport from 2pm each day. 31-year-old Prabath Jayasuriya has only three tests to his name, all played at Galle last July, so he might be a different prospect away from home but he’s carved out a cracking record so far - 29 wickets at 20.37. But they need India to lose or draw the final test against Australia starting today. Sri Lanka have a solid but not amazing CV over the 2021-23 WTC window (beat West Indies 2-0, lost to India 2-0, beat Bangladesh 1-0, drew with Australia 1-1, drew with Pakistan 1-1). They are set to be the first team he has scored more than 1000 runs against. They have played 12 tests in the World Test Championship window, the fewest of any team along with Bangladesh. 36.4 Mitchell to Mathews, no run, shapes away a bit from outside off, Mathews dabs it gently towards the off-side and sets off for a single. Both of them found that out as they departed in quick succession - the former was done in by the sharp movement off the deck whereas the latter fell into a trap. Mendis and Karunaratne were mixing caution with aggression to perfection but you are never really in as a batter on this pitch. 37.1 Matt Henry to Chandimal, no run, seams away from a good length with bounce, Chandimal is in two minds whether to play or leave. It's gotten a bit dark too and the groundstaff were already preparing themselves on the sidelines even before the umps called for them. Here come the players and the umpires.

47.2 Tickner to Chandimal, 3 runs, short and wide, sits up nicely for Chandimal to punch off the back foot. This was a very full inswinger, trapped Mathews on the front pad and the excitement was understandable from the Kiwis. 49.3 Tickner to Chandimal, FOUR, ramped over the cordon! 49.5 Tickner to Chandimal, FOUR, three in a row and this is the best of the lot! 49.4 Tickner to Chandimal, FOUR, Tickner continues to get a pasting! Sharp nip-backer from Tickner, gets lift off the pitch too and Chandimal is cramped on the back foot as he looks to work across the line.

A ball nipping back off a good length had seen him struck in front of middle on the back pad. Mathews would stay a bit longer alongside Dhananjaya, before he too edged one to first slip, one ball after becoming the third Sri Lankan to reach 7,000 Test runs. Mendis' aggression coincided with New Zealand's seamers losing the lengths that had served them so well in the early part of the morning. That however brought Mendis to the crease, and Sri Lanka's approach was transformed. Mendis 87 puts Sri Lanka in command on day one vs New Zealand (Sportstar)

Mendis made 87 and Sri Lanka Dimuth captain Karunaratne 50 in a critical partnership which helped tip the first day in Sri Lanka's favor.

The technique applied by Mendis and Karunaratne in the conditions was exemplary. Chandimal, especially, liked to drive, and one through cover was probably the best shot of the day. Sri Lanka lost an early wicket and had scored only 27 runs at the end of a watchful first hour. He was 39. The ball beat the bat occasionally, but the batting side got on top as New Zealand wasted its reviews on speculative appeals. Sri Lanka was sent in after losing what seemed an important toss.

Hagley Oval, Sri Lanka, and the collapse that never came (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Mendis, Karunaratne, Mathews, Chandimal and de Silva refused to buckle down, and that's not happened often.

Given the long tail, and the lack of experience in Sri Lanka's attack (which New Zealand are very capable of exploiting), 305 for 6 is not an outstanding first-day score. Collectively, they refused to collapse even in the face of probing bowling (mostly from Tim Southee and Matt Henry), as they often have in seaming conditions. [Dhananjaya de Silva](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/dhananjaya-de-silva-465793)manufactured boundaries wherever he could, as he batted in the company of Kasun Rajitha towards the end of the day. [Dinesh Chandimal](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/dinesh-chandimal-300628)preferred the off side, hitting each of his six boundaries in that direction. [Angelo Mathews](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/angelo-mathews-49764)waited for the shorter deliveries, scoring 38 of his 47 runs through the leg side, having also clipped a couple of boundaries off his pads. Had Sri Lanka's batters done the work to figure out the whereabouts of their off stump before they started a Test on foreign soil?

Luckily, New Zealand had no need of one when spin-bowling all-rounder Michael Bracewell rapped wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella on the pads late in the day. Sri Lanka still have an outside chance of making the test championship final against Australia, as long as they beat New Zealand 2-nil and India fail to beat Australia in the final match of their current series. The introduction of spin late in the game got Michael Bracewell a wicket as New Zealand tried to stop Sri Lanka piling on the runs. After being sent in to bat on a green Hagley Oval pitch, the Sri Lanka batters absorbed the pressure from the New Zealand's four-pronged pace attack for the first hour of the day before the visitors took control of the remainder of the session putting on 120 runs for the loss of one wicket at the lunch break.

The latter was particularly troubled by Rajitha but he has grinded it out. He tried to keep it out but was done for pace and the minimal movement. What a day this is turning out to be the Lankans! When the new ball became due, Matt Henry had Rajitha caught at mid-off for 22 and New Zealand sensed the end was near. Sri Lanka had frustrated New Zealand from the start of the day when they resumed at 305-6 and added another 50 as they stretched the innings for a further 17 overs. Christchurch (New Zealand) (AFP) – Sri Lanka's bowlers ripped through the New Zealand top order, including snaring the key wicket of Kane Williamson, to leave the hosts in trouble at 162-5 after the second day of the first Test on Friday.

The Sri Lanka bowlers capitalized on a good effort by their batters to the put the tourists in a strong position at the end of the second day. The tourists added 50 runs for their last four wickets, reasonable return as New Zealand took the second new ball five overs after the start of play. At stumps New Zealand was 162-5, still 193 behind with two allrounders at the crease.
