Out of all of this year’s big Oscar standoffs, the Best Actress competition has been the most contentious. There’s no such thing as a 100-percent sure thing when it comes to the Academy Awards, of course, and not even something as celebrated and consistently praised as, say, Brokeback Mountain or Saving Private Ryan — or even this year’s heavily-favored [Everything Everywhere All at Once](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/everything-everywhere-all-at-once-review-1325710/) — can be said to have an unbeatable, unbreakable lock on things. Here are our hunches on the six big categories (Best Picture, Best Director, and the four acting awards), as well some opinions on who — in a just and perfect world — should be going home with Oscars this year. — Dan Ahwa, fashion and creative director. — Emma Gleason, writer and commercial editor. A very handsome, elegant look from Jenny Slate, who is nominated for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which she voiced, co-produced and co-wrote. The familiar silhouette is great for traipsing the carpet, with the actor giving this a modern finesse with low-maintenance hair and makeup and a layer of necklaces. We love a vintage look from the archives, and this one comes from Alexander McQueen’s The Girl Who Lived in The Tree collection from autumn/winter 2008. The key here is the lustre and texture of luxurious fabrics — the velvet shawl-collar jacket with a glimpse of what may be a scarf or trimming underneath, sheen of the trousers, and gleaming patent shoes — and the accessories, pivotally, a very excellent broach. We read it over the weekend, so it’s very nice to see her back in the public eye and looking so good in this striking scarlet dress by Lebanese fashion designer Elie Saab — and that operatic swathe of red calls to mind another of his famous red carpet looks, the 2002 gown Halle Berry wore to collect her historic Oscar win. Larry Flynt, and current president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this fantastically fluid silver gown is befitting such an esteemed title. That latter was the MO for the Oscars, with this theatrical suit (a tuxedo tail-cape hybrid) by Christian Siriano and a very elegant finger-waved hairstyle. He’s hand in hand with investor and writer Mala Gaonkar — the two worked together on the immersive production Theater of the Mind — wearing a beautifully draped sari in chartreuse with elegant pewter trim. There’s something Christmassy about this Gucci but we love the unapologetic showgirl aspect of this. As one of the few famous faces who can deliver a strong make-up look, long-time makeup artist Sarah Tanno offers up a convincing case for Bladerunner 80s eyes and a defined Robert Palmer femme fatale lip.
Michael B Jordan and Jonathan Majors are among the Oscars presenters who took the stage at the Academy Award rehearsals on March 11 at the Dolby Theater.
The time it would take to get to the stage where they are seated is also accounted for in order to make sure the show flows with ease. There will be surprises on Sunday that fans can look forward to that even the select journalists at the rehearsals weren’t made privy to. For any movie lover, being inside that theatre would be a memorable experience. Most, if not all, the actresses Complex got to see wore high heels along with a casual outfit in what seemed like an attempt to ensure the shoes they are wearing on Sunday are a solid choice. Pugh teased Garfield when he made a mistake while presenting an award, saying “Maybe don’t do that,” which made people in the theatre laugh. Walking into the theatre after years of watching the award show on TV feels surreal. But it’s up against Germany’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which was also nominated for best picture. It’s likely a two-man battle between Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Austin Butler (“Elvis”) for the award. “We’re having a good time but we’re not losing sight of the fact that we made a film about the world’s foremost political prisoner and we have a very strong message to say. Producers are giving some aspects of the Oscars a makeover. Kimmel will preside over a ceremony that could see big wins for the best-picture favourites, Everything Everywhere All at Once. After several days of rain in and around Los Angeles, the sun is out again for a ceremony the Academy Awards are hoping is less stormy than last year.
From classic old Hollywood glamour to that swan dress, the Academy Awards red carpet has produced plenty of memorable fashion moments.
This was the same year that #AskHerMore became a thing, with some stars saying they wouldn't talk about who they were wearing (I disagree with the concept: most stars use the red carpet to make money and build their brands, and a lot of craft and creativity goes into these looks). That’s not my favourite Sharon Stone Gap Oscars collab, but it set the scene for the brilliance that was to come two years later in an outfit that was actually planned. As much as I am loath to draw attention to anything related to John Galliano, we can not talk about Oscars outfits that were derided at the time and now fawned over without mentioning Celine Dion wearing a Dior tuxedo backwards to the 1999 awards show. The look was widely mocked, and those that did defend her at the time praised her bravery rather than the actual look. She called in the costume designer from the film who saved the day by helping her pair a black Gap turtleneck with an Armani tuxedo jacket and black Valentino skirt. But that, along with the response to Rancic's comments, really did change the approach to red carpet fashion as being about more than the dress – it's the person, and the story behind it. This look (and the role she wore it in honour of, of course) took the Dawson’s Creek alumni out of the teen TV genre and escalated her as both a movie star and fashion icon. But this look is iconic in how it helped shift conversations about how we talk about celebrities and red carpet fashion. Halle Berry made history as the first Black winner of the best actress category in 2002, in an epic gown that is another that instantly comes to mind when I think ‘Oscars’. Kelly had worn this exact dress, made by legendary costume designer Edith Heap to the film's premiere the year before and would wear it again later in Life Magazine. Bjork is a true artist, so I don’t believe this was her intention (it was way deeper than that; she’s talked about how it was meant to be a message about fertility) – but this dress was so ahead of its time in terms of stunt dressing. Vera Wang has never been one of my favourite designers and to this day when I remember she was responsible for my favourite red carpet look, I am surprised. To me, that says a lot about how far fashion and pop culture has come since the hideous early noughties (I hope!) in the sense of allowing people to express themselves as they really are through fashion, even on the most traditional of red carpets.

Brendan Fraser is among nominees at the 95th Academy Awards, which are being hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
The network is also streaming the ceremony on its website and app. Unusually, that means British viewers can watch the Oscars on Freeview and Freesat. He also paid tribute to composer John Williams, the oldest nominee in Oscars history. The Banshees of Inisherin has four acting nominations, including Colin Farrell and Kerry Condon. He most recently presided over the 2018 event. This is the American dream. Interestingly, Halle Berry has also been invited to present. "They say Hollywood is running out of ideas. At the Oscars, the World War One epic is the bookies' second favourite to take the top prize, followed by The Banshees of Inisherin. At this point, Everything Everywhere All at Once is the clear frontrunner, having won nearly every major precursor it needed to - with the notable exception of Bafta. Thank you so much for welcoming me back." Later in the ceremony, Everywhere All at Once is the favourite to win best picture after success on this year's awards' circuit.

Celebrities brought the glamour to the Oscars red carpet, with some standout fashion moments - we pick our favourites.
[make the red carpet a little more 'sustainable'](https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/style/300828168/this-old-thing-ive-had-it-for-years-the-rise-of-the-red-carpet-celebrity-rewear), with her rewears at recent awards. It's a far cry from the maudlin tones of her nominated film, and all the richer for it. It's an understated silhouette and colour for the Oscars, but I love all the delicate details and different textures going on in the dress, which reminds me of a vintage nightie in the best possible way. The verve and sophistication of Chau's dress was a welcome respite from the prom-attire on offer by Tinseltown. The clean lines, the right amount of bling and the impeccable neckline really made this one of my favourite looks of the night. Zoe Saldana looks like the cat that got the cream in this pleated silk Fendi gown. A toxic masculinity [slap in the face](https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/film/300552170/oscars-2022-will-smith-hits-chris-rock-over-jada-pinkett-smith-joke) that no one saw coming. A lot of guests wore crisp white, and even the red carpet was swapped out for a subdued nude. I love her curls, but piling them up onto her head and letting the deep v neckline shine was exactly the right choice. [Last year’s Oscars](https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/style/300550181/ensemble-the-most-fabulous-red-carpet-looks-from-the-oscars?rm=a) felt like an out-of-control high school prom night - from the sea of pastel gowns and tuxedos, to the teenage emo PDA from Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, a pants-less Kristen Stewart and a shirtless Timothée Chalamet. The top, complete with shoulder pads, is apparently unseen from the LV archives, and the skirt, while new, is made from "sustainable silk". She looks comfortable and adorably happy, even though she's in full leather and mesh.
