Liz Polley is the new coordinator for Wairarapa Winter Jackets, a charitable organisation distributing donations of warm clothing.
Polley is liaising with the Masterton Food Bank, which has previously distributed jackets to families coming in for food parcels. So, they don’t need to see me – I’m happy just to bag up their order and leave it out for them,” Polley said. “I consider it a privilege to help relieve some of that stress. “If kids have access to warm clothing, they’re more likely to thrive – it’s an essential part of a child’s wellbeing. Despite her busy schedule, Polley said she jumped at the chance to “take on a new challenge” – inspired by witnessing her pupils and their families struggle with the increased cost of living. When Emma Mitchell was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer, the Wairarapa Cancer Society was one of the first places she reached out to.
Matt completed his treatment in August and is now in remission – though he confessed the experience left him feeling “raw”. “It got a really good response – including from my guy mates, who were all really supportive. “When I was diagnosed, not many people in our wider community of friends knew. Cancer survivors are invited to place their handprints on the Relay For Life banner, carried during the first lap. Initially, Emma was given a 64 percent chance of survival, but was given the all-clear in 2019. I was lucky they caught it early.” “I knew the chemicals were doing their job. “At the time, I was completely shell-shocked. “They’d figured out it was cancer right away. We need it to keep going in our community,” she said. “I just walked right on in. Jacinta [Buchanan – former centre manager] was fabulous.

“We have had some staff unavailability issues experienced on the rain network,” she said. “They need to have a whole crew available to run the train, and there’s been some issues being able to get a whole crew together.” “Is it something we need to start to get our heads around – that if we don’t get the government funding, we’re not going to have trains?” she asked Gain, who noted the council will need to have a discussion about what they can do if they can’t get funding.

It’s like warning someone about a rising tide when they’re already in the water wearing a ball and chain. The floating interest rate currently sits at 7.99 per cent with ANZ, whose economists say inflation is “not yet in the bag” and that borrowers need to be “aware of the risk of higher rates”. It was a curse disguised as a blessing. In this period, the average floating residential interest rate in New Zealand peaked at 10.72 per cent, and Masterton people were paying 39.9 per cent of their income to their mortgage. And that family that started renting a house in 2021 now needs to pay $760 a week to service the mortgage and council rates instead of $555. The year was 2021.

For several years, the corner of Daniell St and SH2 Fitzherbert St has flooded, sometimes even flooding the highway as high as the SuperValue supermarket steps.
But Waka Kotahi disagreed that their culverts were causing the flooding. Once the model is peer-reviewed and completed, Wellington Water can provide strategic advice to Waka Kotahi, Kiwirail, and SWDC about what is causing the flooding and how to fix it. The council and the two government agencies did not agree on the cause of the floods and could not agree on who should fix it. Wellington Water is the water services operator for the South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC], and its district programme delivery leader Adam Mattsen said the poor condition of the two culverts might be contributing to the flooding. The sumps carry water to two culverts belonging to Waka Kotahi NZTA, which carry water under the highway to the other side of Daniell St. Two government agencies and a local council disagree about how to fix the flooding in Featherston.
