But the Phoenix rode their luck, as they failed to pressure the cross and close down the man in possession, while the visitors enjoyed plenty of time in the final third but couldn’t find the decisive touch or pass. "He wanted to be (in Auckland) and he's hoping that (she) has the baby early this week so he can be available for the Adelaide game," Talay said. The win keeps Wellington fifth on the table and on track to play finals, with Talay hopeful Zawada's lucky streak with timing can continue. Zawada's importance to the team is hard to understate - this was his 12th goal of the campaign and his ninth in 10 games. "I thank his wife Patrycja for holding on for another day," Talay said after the win. At the last minute, he opted to travel to Auckland for the Eden Park match, and proved the difference between the two finals-chasing sides. Zawada has been on baby-watch all week, with his wife - model Patrycja Wozniak - due to give birth to their first child this weekend and the striker insistent he would be by her side.

The off-contract coach is giving coy, playful answers when asked about his future and club officials have started to assess potential replacements.

“Obviously Chiefy came in alongside me and I believe in Chiefy and the work that he does for the team and for myself,” Talay said on Friday. It will only be Talay’s 98th on the sideline, however, as he was absent on two occasions last season while isolating with Covid-19 – a turn of events that gave Italiano the chance to step in. On Saturday morning, as the Phoenix had their final training before facing Sydney, Talay said he had been asked about his future “a lot of times” as he mingled with fans and media the previous afternoon – “too many times, possibly”. That's where it's at.” He also failed to elaborate when asked what Morrison could do to entice him to stay, instead falling back on a familiar line, that “players come and go and coaches come and go and the club will always be here”. The winningest coach in Phoenix history is off contract at the end of their current campaign and while Talay is in talks with chairman Rob Morrison about a contract extension and had coffee with him as recently as Tuesday, he said it was “an ongoing discussion”.
