South African rapper Costa Titch died suddenly this weekend, his family said on Instagram, hours after he performed at a music festival.

Tsobanoglou’s song “Big Flexa” made him a star across Africa after it became successful on TikTok. “It is with deep pain that we find ourselves having to acknowledge his passing at this time,” Tsobanoglou’s family said in a post on his Instagram. His rap style combines South Africa’s culture, style and indigenous languages with international rap sub-genres like trap music, which originated in Atlanta’s thriving hip hop scene.

Costa Titch: the rising white South African rap star who embraced ... (The Conversation Africa)

Costa Titch's death is another blow to South Africa's music scene which is reeling after several high-profile deaths in recent years.

Instead he chose to embrace South Africa’s diversity in unambiguous racial, socio-economic and cultural terms. The country’s townships (low-cost housing projects) created by apartheid spatial planning and informal settlements are [plagued by](https://theconversation.com/idle-and-frustrated-young-south-africans-speak-about-the-need-for-recreational-facilities-176921) drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment and crime. This is evident in Costa Titch’s adoption of the urban township lifestyle and the ebullience that radiates from his ghetto-themed videos. In this way he falls within the bracket of white South Africans who enthusiastically embrace local cultural norms in forging their artistic identities. Here was a white rapper who was fluent in African languages, dressed like an urban hood dweller, danced like the son of a Pantsula (a township street dance characterised by incredible physical flexibility) expert and shot most of his videos drawing heavily on ghetto scenes. [gave hope](https://theconversation.com/the-town-where-hip-hop-is-healing-south-africas-broken-youth-56943) to young South Africans mired in poverty, violence and uncertainty. The young singer had recently [signed](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/akon-joins-fans-mourning-south-143857004.html) with Akon’s label, Konvict Kulture. This creed brings much optimism in times of national despair and despondency. [believed](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/akon-joins-fans-mourning-south-143857004.html) that Costa Titch was destined for bigger things and could be a game-changing artist. And black audiences patronise everything from house and Maskandi to rap and soul. He had a huge hit with his track Big Flexa and was destined to shine bright on the country’s music scene. As such, the loss of several respected artists is bound to have significant reverberations.
