It’s not their fault that times have changed, that they’re in the boardroom, but the AFL has adjusted and they’re putting them up throughout AFL House. commissioned these paintings for the boardroom, and they were the chairman and the CEO. But then they sort of ran out of room for them and realised in the early 2000s that these massive paintings, A) there’s no room for them. And B) the whole idea started to become a little bit antiquated. “Now, is it a politically correct move on the part of the AFL? We make it known what we stand for, the AFL and our clubs.”

Scoring was even harder to come by in the second term, with both teams scoring just one goal for the quarter. “Richmond want high transition, they want the ball to be moving up and down the field … but build the uncontested marks and then allow the forward to get back inside 50 so you have even numbers inside 50. But the Tigers’ decision to drop down a gear in the third term paid big dividends. The numbers were staggering. But early on Thursday night, the Tigers over-possessed the footy. This was personified in the second quarter, where Richmond had 47 handballs but just 10 inside 50s. You go when you have confidence and have good representation.” He showed ample class particularly in the third term and finished with 18 disposals. Then they were able to execute going inside 50.” It was the first opening-round draw since 2011. In fact Fox Footy’s Jordan Lewis declared: “It even felt like Richmond were playing too quick for Richmond.”

It is a big like and we have gone to work on sort aspects of our game. Once again against Carlton we get down in clearances and it was 50/50 and we were happy with that aspect of our game and midfield did a terrific job. He’s one of the guys we expect to get better and better along the way. It looked somewhat of a different profile to what we normally won games by. We got through, and we were able to pull the lever on the sub which was good. We have been solid at the offensive side of the game and defence we have been OK and clearances hasn’t been a strength. but we have to make sure that we pick the right side to make us win. The fact of the matter is they have to make decisions. Once again we want the player to take the responsibility with the way that they shoot at goal. The polish is one thing that we can take and improve. I thought that we kept them to a really manageable score and couldn’t capitalise when we needed to. Taranto and Hopper will help us there, and if we can get the ball in the front half that, ideally, promotes a Richmond-style of game.
IT ENDED as it started. For the first time since the 1972 semi final, Richmond and Carlton shared the spoils in a dramatic draw. Quarter one.
While Curnow was well-held in the opening half, he shone when the game was there for the taking, kicking three of Carlton's four second-half majors. At the other end of the ground, there were signs that the dynamic partnership of Curnow and McKay would once again flourish in Navy Blue. Of all the scenarios that Carlton, Richmond and football fans drew up, that wasn't one of them, with shared points in the season opener. The Blues' best moments in the term came in the air, with the likes of McKay and Jacob Weitering flying for the Sherrin. A huge grab and two quick goals from Charlie Curnow put the Blues’ noses back in front, but as the physicality rose, so too did the Tigers' time in their forward half. It was a hot start from the Blues, answering the Tigers’ first goal instantly through the boot of Zac Fisher.

AFL great Peter “Spida” Everitt has laughed off a social media post which appeared to suggest the 48-year-old had died.
Everitt continued: “At least if it was true, I have the chance to go to my own wake. “Yesterday, there was one going around and it said ‘Today’s kids will never known what it was like growing up with this man in the world’. of me,” Everitt said.
Tom Lynch kicks a goal in the closing seconds to ensure Richmond and Carlton's AFL season opener ends in an incredible draw.
Curnow gave the Blues a seven-point lead with a goal off the deck before a Bolton behind and Lynch's late goal gave the Tigers a share of the spoils. The Tigers kicked 5.4 to 2.3 in the third quarter on the back of a 20-6 dominance in forward entries. It grew to as much as 14 points but a three-goal surge at the start of the second half put Richmond in front — the first of three lead changes for the term.

The Blues led 4.5 (29) to 2.4 (16) at the major break. The frenetic start simmered into a slog with just six goals kicked in the first half. Richmond showed impressive attack on the ball to force the Blues into a staggering 16 forward half turnovers in the first quarter of football — something not seen since the 2021 season. The superstar forward committed a cardinal sin early in the first quarter of the season-opener against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night when his aim was a mile off when returning the Sherrin to a Richmond player. The Blues had coughed up the ball on the centre wing when Marlion Pickett was awarded a free kick as the ball rolled to Curnow. A scrappy contest ended in a draw as the Tigers' talisman showed signed signs of his best after a difficult 2022.
As is the modern way, he played on, snapped around his body, and made an absolute meal of it. Michael Voss gathered his players on the ground and told them he was proud of them. There's perhaps no greater enigma in the AFL in 2023 than the Magpies — the team the majority of Fox Footy pundits are most worried about going into this ...
“They’re a great team and what they produced last year was awesome. On paper, they should play finals, but they have a tough first month. “Collingwood interests me, only because you can have a year playing on emotion with a new coach. And another pre-season under McRae and more familiarity with the game plan – albeit a game plan opposition would’ve gone to work on that therefore may need to be tweaked — along with the development of youngsters and the team as a whole could get better overall and buffer the near guarantee they won’t play in as many close games. “Now everyone knows about him and this group, so it‘s not going to be as easy. And perhaps, ultimately, they aren’t the bottom two side of 2021, nor the top four side of last year, but lie somewhere in the middle. “Their first month is make or break on the year — but it’s the same for the 14 teams fighting for the eight – their first six weeks are critical of whether they’re going to challenge for top four or be in the mix for the top eight.” But they’re one I’m keeping a close eye on and they have to start the season extremely well in what is a pretty tough start for them,” Johnson told foxfooty.com.au.. The place was up and about, the young kids were outstanding, they had the best young kid in comp who had a year out of the box,” Geelong great Cameron Mooney told foxfooty.com.au. But it’s unsustainable to win the way Collingwood did last year, and how it fares in games that aren’t decided by a kick or two is the big unknown, plus without a tidal wave of momentum, the sugar hit of playing for a new coach, and being the hunted, not the hunters. Of course, this time 12 months ago, it would’ve been audacious to even predict they could even play finals as the club looked set to undergo a rebuild after so much change at the club including the playing group, coaches and in leadership. On one hand, the Magpies — after a massive ride last year under new coach Craig McRae, where they went going from 17th all the way to within a kick of a grand final — bolstered their list with several new recruits to address a number of key needs.

Players from both sides hobbled from the field in a high-scoring, high-attrition contest.
It took until a few minutes out from the trade deadline for Graham Wright to agree to a three-way trade that netted Tom Mitchell. It took him until halfway through the second quarter to have a clear moment. While it was all about Tom Mitchell and Dan McStay in October, it was all about Bobby Hill on Friday night. Port Adelaide went after the 24-year-old last year after he managed only four games in the premiership year. The night of carnage will be as big a story as the upset Collingwood win. In a testament to Collingwood‘s dominance, it took the Cats until nigh on the 30th minute to kick a score. “You wonder how long both teams can keep this up. “I’m just so proud of this team … It took more than five minutes for the first tackle to be laid, such was the frenetic pace of the match in the opening term. “The luck of the Irish.

It has long been argued a side in Tasmania, which has produced champions of the game such as Peter Hudson, Alastair Lynch and Matthew Richardson, would be a fillip to community football. The state government says a standalone side would play four games a year at University of Tasmania Stadium, which is slated to undergo upgrades. "Tasmania is one of the founding football states and has a long history of making rich contributions to the national game," it read. "We deserve a team of our own without having to make taxpayers pay for a stadium - something no other state has had to do to get a team." The state Labor opposition and Greens are opposed, as are 10 Tasmanian federal parliamentarians, including Liberal MPs, who signed a letter urging the league to say yes to a team without a new stadium. Some six months on, the bid for the league's 19th licence sits in a holding pattern as the federal government mulls whether to cough up funds for a contentious $715 million new stadium.
