A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has struck near Christchurch. It struck at 1.42pm, 20km northwest of Akaroa. GeoNet said it has caused moderate shaking.

It comes only hours after a swarm of more than 70 quakes hit Bay of Plenty overnight.
Nearly 7000 felt reports have been recorded by GeoNet from the 4.7 shake. Most of the felt reports were of weak to light shaking. At a depth of 5km it caused light shaking.

It was centred 20km southeast of Christchurch at a depth of 4km. The second quake was a magnitude of 2.9 and GeoNet said it was โunnoticeableโ. A man who lives in the Christchurch hill suburb of Cashmere said: โIt was quite long.โ
