Manchester City v Burnley: FA Cup quarter-final – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Can Vincent Kompany sink his old club's FA Cup hopes as Burnley travel to Manchester City? Find out with Scott Murray.

The ball was begging to be bundled over the line. The Lineker Affair wasn’t the first time a prime-time light entertainment star wandered off piste in search of a greater truth. And no wonder: pretty sure they’d have settled at the start of the season for winning the Championship in style. Cork is extremely fortunate not to go into the referee’s notebook. Then suddenly Rodri sends a diagonal ball towards Walker on the right-hand edge of the box. The ball pings off the top of Beyer’s head and out for a corner. He enters the box, drops a shoulder to see off Maatsen, then rolls across to tee up Alvarez for a simple tap-in. City soon come again, Phillips striding into the box down the same flank and sending a screamer over the bar from a tight angle. Alvarez drops a shoulder to see off Al Dakhil, jinks inside, and absolutely roofs his shot into the net. 83 min: Cullen sweeps a cross in from the left. 87 min: De Bruyne dribbles down the inside left channel and draws a clumsy foul from Cullen. According to Gary Lineker on the BBC, Erling Haaland has spent the last two matches scoring goals at the rate of one every 15 minutes and 45 seconds.

Taking on the powerhouses: Grimsby's golden age in the FA Cup (The Guardian)

After beating Hartlepool and Port Vale, Grimsby were drawn at home to Manchester City in the fifth round. Within 15 months City would be champions for the first ...

Moulson was treated in the dressing room for the remainder of the game. His second touch was his last – of the game, and as a Grimsby player. Grimsby’s share of the gate receipts was £1,982, 11 shillings and seven pence. In the semi-final Grimsby were drawn to meet the most exciting team in the country, Wolves, at Old Trafford. They were hammered 5-0 – “a preposterous exaggeration of Wolverhampton’s merit”, said the Guardian – with Dennis Westcott scoring four. Grimsby’s second great Cup run occurred in the last season before the second world war; though nobody realised at the time, it was the end of the club’s golden period. With a couple of Division Two teams in the last four, Grimsby were 5-2 second favourites to win the Cup. It meant a Grimsby debut for the 24-year-old Irish goalkeeper George Moulson. They returned to London for the quarter-finals, facing a Chelsea side fighting relegation. The game was played on a ferociously hot March day. Arsenal were having an unplanned year off in the league but were still a symbol of class, glamour and might. This paper said that the two teams had “given Lincolnshire football one of the greatest stimulants in its history”.

FA CUP QUARTER-FINALS PREVIEW: Vincent Kompany returns to Man City with red-hot Burnley, fourth-tier Grimsby are out to make history while Fulham can ruin ...

Twelve-time winners United have not won the FA Cup since 2016. The dynamic winger duo of Tyrhys Dolan and Sorba Thomas are fantastic footballers, while Sammi Szmodics is adding goals and assists from his central role. Jon Dahl Tomasson is the boss and Rovers have never been past the last eight of the FA Cup in 12 attempts. The odds are stacked slightly against them to change that here but Rovers travel to South Yorkshire in fine form having won seven of their last eight games. Blackburn are one of six teams in England’s top four tiers to never play at the new Wembley. Burnley won the FA Cup in 1914 but these sides’ last meeting in the competition was in 2019, when City won 5-0.

Manchester United vs Fulham, FA Cup: How to watch live, stream ... (Premier League News, Video, Scores | NBC Sports' ProSoccerTalk)

Manchester United will continue their pursuit of a cup treble when they host Fulham at Old Trafford in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Leon Bailey will be looking to make amends for the penalty he conceded in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. He was a star at the World Cup with England and his early goals and assists in games have been a key feature of Arsenal’s title push. Odegaard was always seen as a silky playmaker but he’s added extra grit and drive to his play and his connection with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli is a big reason why Arsenal are challenging for the title. He needs more help to share the goalscoring burden but he is seeing plenty of chances fall his way as United play direct and to his strengths. He has had dips in form this season and has struggled a little with injuries but he still delivers mind-boggling moments consistently and is always hungry to deliver. “Before today I prefer to hide this situation and to try to speak, to try to improve the spirit, the situation, with the words, With a lot of situations. They have been terrible at home this season though, winning just twice and they have the worst home record in the Premier League. The point moves Southampton (23 points) to within a point of West Ham and Bournemouth in 18th and 19th, respectively, but now three points away from safety following results elsewhere on Saturday. Hope is a dangerous thing, as they say, especially against a side fighting and scrapping for its survival in the top flight of English football. Fulham, on the other hand, find themselves suddenly in one of their worst moments all season, having lost back-to-back games while conceding six goals to Brentford and Arsenal. The Red Devils have lost just two of their last 26 games in all competitions (to Arsenal and Liverpool, in Premier League play). The fixtures continue to come thick and fast for Manchester United, who will play their 14th game since the start of February (47 days – a game every four days, on average, for a month and a half) before a brief respite in the form of the international break next week.

Why are FA Cup semi finals played at Wembley Stadium ... (Sporting News)

The 2022/23 FA Cup looks set for a thrilling finale in the coming weeks the news of a non Premier League team reaching the semifinal stage.

The celebration. The goal. The prospect of 'earning' the right to play at Wembley was a key aspect of FA Cup campaigns with that factor now brought forward to the semifinal stage. Fans of teams playing in the FA Cup semifinals have been frustrated by the FA's decision to move the games to Wembley for a host of reasons. The decision to move FA Cup semifinals away from the traditional setting of neutral club grounds was made in 2007 as the FA aimed to generate income from ticket sales at the new 90,000-capacity arena. However, following the stadium's redevelopment, the FA announced the bold move to also play all FA Cup semifinal matches at the stadium, alongside the final itself, from 2008 onwards.

The hosts had gone 63 home Cup games without defeat, a run that went back to November 1974, so few at Anfield expected anything other than a 64th in the ground’s first ever Sunday game, Everton having been drawn at Goodison and played on the Saturday. Grimsby, though, are refusing to engage high, so Dunk is able to bring the ball away. But – and this is pet hate of mine – rather than go with the foot that’s farthest from the ball, allowing himself a split-second long to get to it and more control when he does, he extends the nearer one and sends a shot wide. only for Undav to follow up up and put in. Grimsby captain Luke Waterfall eyeing Brighton upset with Wembley ... (Mirror.co.uk)

In a port where the catch of the day was once haddock or cod in the back of the net, Grimsby are planning to land their biggest fish yet.

It was brilliant at Southampton when all those inflatable fish were flying on the pitch at full-time and we were chucking them back. “Gates were down to 2,500 when I first walked in the door, but they were up to 9,500 by the end of that season and it was a fast track towards reconnecting a club with its fans and the city. It was a magical time to be involved in the rebuild of a football club, and that Cup run was the start of Lincoln climbing back from non-League to where they are now. On that run we beat Brighton, who were managed by Chris Hughton and flying high in the Championship at the time, and when we went 1-0 down early on you think, 'Oh no, this is going to be a long day at the office.' “Every young kid rehearses doing that in the mirror, but only a handful get to live the dream. “It was a real eye-opener speaking to the pilots about teamwork and their trust in each other.

The FA Cup continues to deliver plenty of shocks and plenty of Premier League clubs have been on the receiving end as the quarterfinal is set.

And even though Haaland is currently overperforming his expected goals total, it’s clear that projecting him for the Premier League record is rather realistic. Evan Ferguson scores twice and Deniz Undav, Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma are also on target in 5-0 Amex win over Grimsby Town.

They made it 4-0 with eight minutes to go when Webster picked out March making a diagonal run into the six yard box and March headed powerfully past Crocombe. Undav held the ball up on the edge of the box and laid it into the Irishman’s path and his right-foot shot flew into the bottom corner. March’s header gave Webster space to open up his body and side-foot a right-foot shot which came back off the bar before Ferguson put the tie to bed in the 70th minute. He cushioned Mac Allister’s dink with one touch which gave him the space to sweep a right-footed shot inside the right-hand post. Albion nearly found an unlikely route to goal three minutes after the break. Kaoru Mitoma’s deflected effort in the closing moments rounded off a good afternoon’s work by Albion.

He danced round the keeper, sent Reed to the wrong fire and finally lifted a shot that was blocked on the line by Willian. The penalty, and the red cards for Willian and Mitrovic, were clear cut. Moments later Antony plays a one-two with Sancho and hits a rasper from the edge of the area that is well saved by Leno. Fulham will be getting one or two plaudits. He rolls the ball across to Fernandes, who walks into the area, steadies himself and scorches a drive past Leno. Man United seize on Fulham indiscipline in FA Cup quarterfinal (ESPN Australia)

Man United weren't at their best on Sunday but cruised into the FA Cup semifinals thanks to Fulham's trio of red cards in the second half.

[Harry Maguire](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/157073/Harry-Maguire) took an eternity to play the ball into midfield because of a lack of options, and the game might have had a different outcome if Fulham hadn't imploded. [Aleksandar Mitrovic](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/183209/Aleksandar-Mitrovic) put the visitors ahead early in the second half before a chaotic five-minute spell saw referee Chris Kavanagh show three red cards to the London side. He has managed his squad so well that United are on course to comfortably finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League while also adding silverware. The Carabao Cup is already in the bag and Brighton stand in the way of a first FA Cup final since 2018. Even with 10 men and level at 1-1, there was a chance they could still go through, but Mitrovic, in particular, ended any hope of that by seeing red. When Jadon Sancho's shot was blocked on the line by Willian, Kavanagh was sent to the pitchside monitor by VAR Neil Swarbrick to have another look at the incident.
