The show today was Verstappen, who overcame a mechanical problem in qualifying that forced him to start 15th and quickly work his way up the grid. There have been no signs of an offseason drop in performance and George Russell, who moved up to third after the Alonso penalty, predicted after the season-opener that Red Bull would win every race this season. But he was later handed a 10-second penalty for incorrectly serving an early penalty and that dropped him to fourth.

Alonso took the lead into Turn 1 but a subsequent time penalty for lining up outside his grid box, coupled with the relentless pace of the Red Bulls, meant he had to settle for third place. “The team did a fantastic job. Mercedes and Ferrari had no answers for Red Bull’s pace as they distantly followed in two-by-two formation, Russell getting the better of team mate Lewis Hamilton, and Carlos Sainz leading Charles Leclerc home. we really did a job in the first stint, but that Safety Car again tried to take the victory from us in Jeddah – but not this time! I don’t know what to do.” Sergio Perez converted pole position into victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as team mate Max Verstappen recovered from P15 to make it successive one-two finishes for Red Bull. That Safety Car… In the meantime, Perez found another level of pace to respond to Verstappen’s charge and stabilise the lead gap at just over five seconds, with a similar margin back to Alonso in third, followed by the Mercedes cars, the Ferraris and the Alpines. Ferrari duo Sainz and Leclerc sandwiched the Mercedes of Hamilton, as Tsunoda – another to benefit from the timing of the Safety Car – Ocon and Gasly rounded out the points-paying positions. That strategic move paid off for Ferrari when Sainz pitted on Lap 16, and Leclerc a lap later, with both drivers getting the jump on Stroll as they rejoined the action – the Canadian’s evening then ending dramatically when he was told to stop his car on track. When the grid formed up and the lights went out – with most drivers opting for medium tyres – Alonso sent the crowd wild as he bolted off the line to snatch the lead from Perez into Turn 1, with Russell slotting into P3 ahead of Stroll and Sainz. Perez overcame an attack from Alonso at the start, a nervy Safety Car period and Verstappen’s charge from the midfield to make up for the potential win he lost at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit a year ago – kick-starting his championship hopes in the process.

Formula 1 Racing 2023: How to Watch and Livestream the Saudi ... (CNET)

Max Verstappen looks to make it two for two in 2023 at today's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Here's how to watch without cable.

Sling TV lacks ABC, which could be a problem for fans hoping to catch the F1 races in North America. Those in the UK will need Sky Sports to watch F1 racing in 2023. As an added bonus, Hulu Plus Live TV comes with the rest of the Disney Bundle, which includes a subscription to Disney Plus, as well as ESPN Plus. [ESPN Plus](https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/espn-plus-review-a-must-have-for-some-but-not-all-die-hard-fans/), but the service offers a ton of other content for die-hard sports fans. If you already have Sky Sports as part of your TV package, you can stream the game via its app, but cord-cutters will need to get the Sky Entertainment and Netflix package starting at £26 per month, plus an additional £20 per month to include Sky Sports. You can catch the entire race weekend with a subscription to YouTube TV. If you find yourself unable to view the game locally, you may need a different way to watch the game -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. Teams need both strategy and skill to compete against some of the best minds in motorsports. We've broken down everything you need to know in order to stream today's race, and all the other F1 races this season. The length of the races also varies, with some, like the Indianapolis 500, lasting 500 laps and taking over three hours to complete. The entire race weekend, including practice sessions and qualifying, will be shown in the US on ESPN's family of television networks. The US will now host three F1 races this season for the first time: in Austin, Miami and Vegas.

Lap-by-lap report: Can the field capitalise on a rare qualifying mis-step from Max Verstappen? Find out with John Brewin.

17/50 Leclerc pits and so Verstappen is in fourth but still to pit. Verstappen has the fastest lap now, and Hamilton is the only drover on medium tyres. 19/50 Alonso pits, takes his penalty and stays ahead of Russell for second. 20/50 Stroll pulling up did a solid for his colleague Fernando Alonso in the Aston. 42/50 The action is at the back of the field, at this point. 28/50 Russell is told to let Hamilton in but then tells his team Alonso has a penalty. The gap between Perez and Verstappen is 5.5 seconds or thereabouts. 44/50 Perez has the fastest lap and if he retains that then he will be the championship lead over Verstappen, who is going to fall short of the 16/21 races he had targeted. 26/50 Alex Albon calls in to his Williams team. 33/50 Leclerc is not happy with his car. 38/50 Verstappen is not happy. The last few laps will see him and Verstappen try and land the fastest lap.

Alonso loses podium finish at F1's Saudi GP after penalty - The Race (The Race)

Fernando Alonso has lost his 100th Formula 1 podium, having been assessed a penalty by the FIA stewards after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

“I think now the discussion is around the jack touching car or not,” Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack confirmed later on. Russell’s newfound podium finish is his 10th in Formula 1 and opens Mercedes’ account for the season in terms of silverware amid what has been a disheartening start to life with its W14 car – which the team has already confirmed that it will be revising massively, feeling it got the concept of the car wrong. It is not yet exactly clear what the pitstop infringement was, though – with crew members not allowed to touch the car during the serving of the time penalty – the rear jack did appear to touch Alonso’s AMR23 before the penalty had been properly served.

Formula One: Fernando Alonso stripped of podium after incorrectly ... (New Zealand Herald)

Fernando Alonso's joy has turned to heartbreak in an instant in Jeddah on Monday morning after being stripped of his 100th podium finish for failing to ...

With a similar incident happening to Alpine’s Estaban Ocon in Bahrain in the first race of the season, the precedent had been well established for Alonso to be handed an additional 10-second time penalty, dropping him from P3 to P4. The regulations state that cars must wait for the duration of the penalty before touching the car if the time penalty is served in a pit stop. After the race, Alonso tore into the FIA for the length of time it took them to give the second penalty. The officials ruled that, while serving the penalty, the rear jack to lift Alonso’s car up for the tyre change had made contact with the AMR23 before the five-second penalty had been completed. It was, however, short-lived, with Alonso handed a 5-second time penalty for lining up outside of his grid box, ending up about half a tyre’s width to the left of his P2 spot. The pace of the Aston Martin kept Alonso in a strong position for the rest of the race, coming home third behind a victorious Sergio Perez, as well as a surging Max Verstappen who charged from 15th on the grid to second.

Alonso loses podium after penalty as Perez wins Saudi GP (BBC Sport)

Sergio Perez holds off team-mate Max Verstappen to take a Red Bull one-two in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Alonso was too far to the left, and had his left-hand wheels out of the grid box on the track. He served it at his pit stop under the safety car but towards the end of the race Mercedes told Russell to push as hard as he could to keep the margin between the two cars to less than five seconds in case Alonso was penalised for the pit stop itself. In the stop, the mechanic at the back of the car touched it with the rear jack before the penalty time was up and the stewards punished him post-race, giving Russell his first "podium" of the season, even though Alonso stood on it with Red Bull drivers. Verstappen set his mind on trying to set fastest lap and clinched it on the final lap - stealing it from Perez - to ensure he leads the championship by virtue of the point he gained for setting it. Perez was 5.4 seconds in front by the time Verstappen got into second place and was able to hold the margin at about that same amount for the rest of the race. He served it in his pit stop, but it was adjudged that the team had broken the rules by touching the car before the five seconds had elapsed and he was given a 10-second penalty as a result, promoting Russell to third.

Alonso gets Saudi GP F1 podium back after penalty overturned ... (The Race)

Fernando Alonso has had his controversial Saudi Arabian Grand Prix penalty overturned, which reinstates his third-place finish.

It is understood that these related to the front jack rather than the rear. Nonetheless, the team argued this proved it was incorrect to assert there was an agreement that “touching the car in any way, including with a jack, would constitute “working” on the car”. The team successfully argued that the stewards were wrong to believe there was an emphatic agreement in place that the jack touching the car did indeed constitute working on it.

"At the end of the day, we've got to stick within the guidelines. It is a bit sad for the FIA." Alonso added: "Today is not good for the fans.
