Ireland vs England LIVE: Six Nations 2023 build-up as Ireland aim to ... (The Independent)

If they can bounce back to beat an unstoppable-looking Irish team at the Aviva Stadium, then it will go down as one of the all-time great Six Nations shocks.

It looks glorious in Dublin after some morning rain, the skies blue and the sun just starting to dip. Not an empty seat in the place for what could be a famous Irish evening. It is set up perfectly for Andy Farrell’s side - can England gatecrash the party? The England full back returns in kind, Lowe claiming a mark inside his 22. A tackle in the air from Owen Farrell, Jamison Gibson-Park bumped with a limited use of the arms from the England skipper. If they can bounce back to beat an unstoppable-looking Irish team at the Aviva Stadium, then it will go down as one of the all-time great Six Nations shocks.

"I've been lucky enough to play alongside a big chunk of that English team and I know how proud they are. On the face of it a trip to Dublin is the last fixture England would have wanted. But such is the strength of this Irish side and the state of the England team that another embarrassing defeat is far from the realms of possibility. Even though Dublin has never been an easy place for teams to go, it is hard to remember a time when England travelled across the Irish Sea with expectations so low, and fears of another soul-searching defeat so high. His Ireland side have won 21 of their past 23 Tests - the two defeats coming away to France and New Zealand - are world No 1 and heavily fancied to win the Grand Slam this afternoon. The match against France was effectively over as a contest within the first 10 minutes.

Minute-by-minute report: Can Ireland clinch a Six Nations grand slam with victory over England in Dublin? Find out with Lee Calvert.

The answer from this example is “not great” as the replacement Ireland fullback bounces the ball off himself to give England a scrum in the Irish half. The latest deep kick from Farrell has Johnny Sexton shanking one into touch for not many metres, as even the most experience mad on the park starts to tighten up with the weight of expectation. The ball is spending a lot of time in the air, as both sides look to kick and it’s England who are winning the battle so far. The ball ends up in touch and the teams set to with some pushing and shoving, which adds even more to the tension and drama. He’s stopped, but on the next phase he’s up to take an offload from Conan to run over in the corner. Ireland work the short-side via Mack Hansen who feeds Dan Sheehan who is lurking on the right touchline. But England aren’t lying down for it as they catch and drive a maul over the line for George to dab it down. The Fields Of Athenry is ringing around the stadium as the home fans finally start to relax and truly believe. “One of the best nights of our careers today. I thought we showed a tremendous amount of fight, we gave away too many penalties and the game changed with the card, but we stuck in it and caused them some problems. It was squeaky bum time for a while at 10-9, and the pressure France had put on us in recent weeks. - TRY!

England player ratings: Forward pack fronts up against Ireland while ... (planetrugby.com)

England fell to a 29-16 defeat to the Six Nations Grand Slam winners Ireland in the tournament's final match. We rate the Red Rose players in defeat.

He landed a few solid hits on defence but also conceded a penalty and turnover over. 6 Lewis Ludlam: An abrasive performance in the heat of the battle, piling into the rucks and muscling up on defence. 8 Alex Dombrandt: The number eight didn’t quite rise to the occasion again, and while he did have some success with his carries, he still isn’t fronting up physically. While he didn’t test the fringes, his passing and kicking were the highlights of his game. It was not the perfect game from the centre, but the value he added to the backline was clear to see, particularly in the battle with Bundee Aki. 13 Henry Slade: His best performance of the tournament and aided by having the powerful Manu Tuilagi inside him.

[Mako Vunipola](https://www.rugbypass.com/players/mako-vunipola/), though, had a few decent carries. [Ollie Chessum](https://www.rugbypass.com/players/oliver-chessum/), he helped to give England’s pack a better overall presence at the breakdown to slow down the Irish ball. He wasn’t a game-changer and neither were Deserved kudos for holding Sexton up over the line off a penalty tap but otherwise struggled to impose himself in the first half. [Charlie Ewels](https://www.rugbypass.com/players/charlie-ewels/) was dispatched, and England clung on to a 15-all draw until the final 10 minutes at Twickenham before losing that encounter 15-32. His work rate was positive, but it never looked like it would have a result-changing influence. However, he was much more of a nuisance here despite starting with an offside penalty concession and then another soft giveaway for closing the gap at a lineout in the Irish 22. Anonymous versus the French, he gave it socks and didn’t tire against the Irish, touching down for England’s sole try off a 73rd-minute maul. Irrelevant versus France, he wielded influence here as witnessed when good running forced Keenan to shank a first-half kick to touch. This was a tidy display throughout, his first-half highlights including one lovely offload in the Irish 22 and then a tackle that forced a There was a viral debate as to whether it was a red card foul but the moral of the incident was that Steward should never have given the referee the incentive to penalise him in the first place by the way he turned his body into the contact.
