Wild weather has battered parts of central and southern areas of the country overnight.

The weather authority said yesterday that a deep low weather system is expected to develop along a front to the east of the lower South Island today - bringing the potential for severe gale southerlies, heavy rain and large southerly waves for eastern parts of the South Island. The wild weather conditions come as MetService warns of heavy rain and severe gales for parts of central and southern New Zealand that is expected to continue through to tomorrow morning. Parts of the Clutha district are without power and there is widespread flooding on roads as wild weather hits the south. Heavy rain warnings have been in effect for parts of Canterbury, Westland, Dunedin, Fiordland, Southland and Clutha. Heavy rain and severe gales have been battering parts of central and southern New Zealand.

The West Coast, Otago and Southland took the brunt of power outages and roofs were torn off by a small tornado in a storm that's moving up the country.

In Southland, a large tree was uprooted in Invercargill by strong winds in Queen's Park, where other large trees were recently removed due to their size and age creating a falling risk. The strong rain and wind watches are in place until 3am Wednesday. The road that travels between Harihari and Ross, State Highway 6, is closed with no further detour in place. Now we have no power because the tornado took out a power pole," said manager Ross Brown. South Islanders woke to damage caused by a small tornado, floods, slips and buckets of rain on Tuesday. However, there are no MetService weather warnings in place as of Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services are responding to fallen trees and surface flooding.

“We don’t anticipate any major issues, but staff and contractors are ready to respond should any issues arise. Matt Alley, group controller for emergency management Otago said: “We have started to see expected impacts from the forecasted weather system this morning. The tree on the corner of Isadore and Middleton Rds was hanging over the footpath and on to the side of the road. Fire crews were kept busy all morning. Parts of the Clutha district are without power and there is widespread flooding on roads as wild weather hits the south. Most of that fell between 6am and 9am.
