“Any athlete who accepts coaching from Mr Robertson during his ban is at risk of a ban themselves.” “Mr Robertson filed evidence which was contested by Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ), and which led to the allegation of tampering. Robertson holds six national distance running records, including the half and full marathon.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee said the 33-year-old middle distance runner's actions went against everything the New Zealand team stands for.

In 2004, New Zealand cyclist Stephen Swart admitted that he and his Motorola teammates had taken EPO during the 1995 Tour de France. EPO is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List and is banned at all times. We also acknowledge Athletics NZ, DFSNZ and HPSNZ for extending wellbeing support to Robertson.”

The extraordinary lengths Kiwi Olympian Zane Robertson took to ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Falsified documents and false testimony produced to support Zane Robertson's bizarre doping defence.

Having asked for the vaccine, there was no reason for me to believe that what I was being administered was not the vaccine,” Robertson submitted in his witness statement, dated December 21, 2022. “We’re really open to any defence put forward by an athlete, we don’t look to catch athletes or tick another box and say ‘we’ve got another one’, we’re actually looking to find out what the right answer is. After being informed of the finding, Robertson asked to have his ‘B’ sample tested. Paterson said it was a significant undertaking from his agency to investigate the defence put forward by Robertson, and credited the close working relationship DFSNZ has with overseas authorities in being able to get to the bottom of the claims. In support of his claims, Robertson included sworn affidavits from two Kenyan doctors, “hospital notes” and a “hospital report”, which appeared to be medical records generated by the medical facility, confirming that EPO was administered to the Kiwi athlete. The witness also asserted the medical notes relied on by Robertson were not generated by the facility, and the patient number on the medical notes did not belong to Robertson. “It was not obvious to me that the doctor administering the treatment was not the same doctor I had told that I was an athlete because both were wearing face masks,” Robertson said. “I believe I did everything I could to prevent EPO being administered, but it occurred through the medical negligence of the hospital.” According to a joint memorandum filed by Robertson’s legal counsel and Drug Free Sport NZ, the 33 year-old initially sought to offer a “no fault” defence, claiming that he was the victim of “medical negligence” at a Kenyan hospital. Robertson, who holds seven national records, was found to have breached the rules “for the presence and use or attempted use of the prohibited substance Erythropoietin (EPO)”. [Robertson has been slapped with an eight-year ban from the sport for multiple anti-doping rule violations](https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/300836335/olympian-zane-robertson-banned-for-eight-years-for-doping-violations). A cross-agency investigation has exposed the extraordinary lengths Kiwi Olympian Zane Robertson went to in an effort to hoodwink anti-doping authorities after the performance enhancing drug EPO was found in his system.

Kiwi runner claims he was injected with EPO instead of a Covid vaccine in a Kenyan hospital but anti-doping officials dismiss his excuses.

He also claimed that he had told the attending Doctor that he was an athlete and could not be treated with a substance that was on the prohibited list. “DFSNZ responded to Mr Robertson’s evidence with expert evidence from Dr Stephen Ritchie who commented on the clinical implausibility of the medical treatment allegedly received by Mr Robertson. His evidence was that he had not realised it was a second Doctor who administered the medication, so he did not repeat his request not to be treated with a prohibited substance. On that occasion, Jake Robertson won the race in 28:06 with Zane finishing 11th in 29:03 before subsequently announcing his retirement at the start of this year. He tried to provide documentation to back this up but anti-doping investigators decided it was false paperwork. Robertson moved to Kenya with his twin brother Jake aged 17 to try to make it as distance runners.

Paterson stressed DFSNZ “at this point in time” has no evidence to suggest that Robertson was doping during the period the records were set. “We can only deal with the positive test in front of us. Robertson holds seven New Zealand records over the 3000m to marathon distance. But EPO can be notoriously difficult to detect with test results often producing “atypical findings”, which is not the same as a positive result. Drug Free Sport NZ (DFSNZ) chief executive Nick Paterson confirmed his agency had engaged its UK counterparts to carry out the testing of Robertson at the Manchester event. EPO is a hormone used to boost red blood cell production to increase oxygen transport around the body, improving aerobic performance.

Asked why the public should believe him when he says it was a “one off”, Robertson replied: “I have been tested over 50 times in my career and after every single race that I’ve ever competed well in. I’ve been tested before the races, after the races, and my samples are stored for the next 10 years after the events ... It’s a culture of the sport, that’s it.” In the end, lose our contracts, lose our income, lose our race winnings, and eventually give up not having the ability to have a family ...
