China began to show more on attack in the latter stages of the half, and forced an impressive reflexive save from Sail with a good shot from close range. The Chinese side held their defensive shape well, however, and forced the All Whites to attack largely down the edges and send in hopeful crosses. There were promising signs for the All Whites, but the absence of star striker Chris Wood, who is nursing an injury, was felt throughout the opening half in particular.

With New Zealand reduced to ten men, China looked to make the most of their numerical advantage and while they created scoring opportunities where unable to capitalise. China were happy to sit back and absorb the All Whites attacks, preferring to defend and then look to score on the break. New Zealand dominated territory and possession in the first half but were unable to make the most it.

Captain sent of in All Whites draw with China (RNZ)

All Whites defender Tommy Smith didn't get to celebrate his 50th international the way he would have liked.

"Obviously the game shifts when you lose a man and we had to hang on a bit so that's football but we just need to find the back of the net." "There are aspects we can be very very happy with, some of the build-up, the pressing, the aggression, the way we kept possession for large chunks and the chances we created particularly in the first half," Sail said. "But disappointing for Tommy especially in his 50th, that's not the way we wanted his occasion to go."
