Van Gisbergen encouraged by Gen3 raceability (V8 Sleuth)

SHANE van Gisbergen has lauded an encouraging sign for Supercars' Gen3 project following the opening race of the Melbourne 400 at Albert Park.

“I got a small slipstream off of (De Pasquale) but I thought when he was behind me, he probably had a bit more on me,” noted the Erebus driver. “I followed Anton (De Pasquale, early race leader) and thought ‘oh shit, the Fords have got no grunt’ and then when I got in front he was even faster than I was on him. “You could never get a slipstream so now you can get a slipstream again.

Explained: Supercars' AGP tyre loophole (Speedcafe)

A closer look at the small change in the rules for the weekend of Supercars racing which opened the Race 3 tyre loophole.

Instead, it was possible to maintain race pace until there were no later opportunities to take the CPS, and there was thus little cost in using another two super softs on the rear (noting also that Races 4, 5, and 6 are shorter than Race 3 anyway, and those extra super softs from Race 3 can be put on the front in one of Races 4, 5, or 6). Unless there was some massive discrepancy in pace from compound to compound, the fastest way to complete a dry race would be one set of super softs and one set of hards, meaning just the one pit stop. [Triple Eight used it to attack in the case of Broc Feeney and defend in the case of eventual race winner Shane van Gisbergen, who was followed into the lane by Erebus’ Brodie Kostecki](https://www.speedcafe.com/2023/03/30/rushed-van-gisbergen-pit-stop-part-of-triple-eight-plan/). To close it completely, the regulations would need a stipulation such as, “At this Event, Teams which use more than four (4) SS Tyres must also use at least four (4) H Tyres, and vice versa, during race 3, 4, 5 and 6.” Triple Eight, for example, could change from super soft to super soft, but would have to change all four corners, and hence the only gain would be the small increase in lap speed on an out lap (when tyres are cold) and perhaps one more, at the cost of using tyres which will need to be rolled out again in another race. Of course, that only closes part of the loophole, that being around the quantity of slick tyres changed (as opposed to specifics around use of compounds). Given there is only one compound of wet tyre, the provision is consistent with the rules for pit stops at sprint races with just a single slick compound, in which two tyres are the minimum requirement. That – specifically one rule within Further Supplementary Regulation 1.4.1 – is the critical change to the rules for the weekend which enabled the strategy play from Triple Eight, Erebus, and BJR. Supplementary Regulation 5.8.1 pertains to qualifying sessions (and hence is irrelevant for the purpose of this piece), 5.8.2 is reproduced above, and 5.8.3 is essentially a reminder that the Operations Manual prohibits mixing tyre compounds on a car, which means the rule (D17.1.10) still applies regardless. Supplementary Regulation 5.8.2 states, “At this Event, Teams must use at least four (4) SS Tyres and at least four (4) H Tyres during race 3, 4, 5 and 6,” while Schedule A2, as varied by Further Supplementary Regulation 1.3.1, stipulates that a minimum of four tyres must be changed in at least one pit stop in each race. Under the Supplementary Regulations for the event, when Rule D17.5.2 was declared, Supplementary Regulations 5.8.1, 5.8.2, and 5.8.3 no longer applied, nor did a rule which the Supplementary Regulations created regarding notification of tyre compounds. That is not a strict requirement – it is permissible to change from super soft to hard and back, for example – but either of the aforementioned single-stop approaches are the only rational ones absent any misfortune or unusual factors.

Supercars defends Burgess after Triple Eight stoush (V8 Sleuth)

SUPERCARS' Head of Motorsport Adrian Burgess has received full support from CEO Shane Howard amid the fallout from Triple Eight's Newcastle disqualification ...

“At the end of the day, I’m in my position, so Supercars have to work with me, they’re in their position so I respect their position. “Yes, they have done an incredible job, that team, in designing these cars and there has been incredible workload as the whole of pitlane has done to produce and debut the cars – and we understand it because we know the effort that has gone into it. “Was Adrian asked for approval? “There are rules and regulations that are in there and in place for all the right reasons. “Difficulties and timings and things can obviously be a contributing factor but at the end of the day, the teams are to present cars that are compliant with the rules. The fallout is understood to have included a raft of teams clarifying ‘minor non-compliance’ issues on their own cars with Supercars in the lead-up to Albert Park. Triple Eight pointed to the rush to get to Newcastle as part of the reason why it installed the coolboxes to the right of the driver rather than the designated place in the passenger area. “You have a responsibility as a team to operate within the rules,” Howard said. “We completely disagree with that, and I think that was clear in the hearing,” Howard told media at Albert Park of Triple Eight’s insistence that approval was granted. “Jamie and I have discussed it post-this and we agree that the decision has been made and we move on.” [losing the appeal](https://www.v8sleuth.com.au/triple-eight-loses-appeal-against-newcastle-disqualification/) the team has publicly [maintained that approval was granted](https://www.v8sleuth.com.au/triple-eight-reacts-to-newcastle-appeal-dismissal/), an apparent sign of its lingering discontent from the saga. [slammed Supercars’ handling of the matter](https://www.v8sleuth.com.au/whincup-rips-supercars-for-lack-of-competency-over-driver-safety/) in media interviews, alleging the truth was not told in the stewards hearing.

Supercars boss rules out driver censorship (Speedcafe)

Supercars supremo Shane Howard has reassured Shane van Gisbergen that drivers are free to speak out on Gen3 without fear of recriminations.

“So the process that we’ve set up with the driver group is for them to provide feedback and solutions, and table those ideas early prior to our race meetings. And also, if they have any specific issues with the car, the driver group will collate those responses, so you’re not having 25 guys firing at you with different ideas. “We don’t suppress anything that they say, but, look, sometimes you need to have the full story, too, right?” “I was approached in regard to that and I thought it was a sensible way to go about business,” he said. And it will evolve through input from, obviously, team owners, the Commission, the technical working group, and driver feedback – all of those that think things are important in developing and improving the car. Will it evolve?
