Bright start but Moana Pasifika run out of steam against Highlanders (1 News)

Southerners roll over the top of home side at Mt Smart Stadium, securing their third consecutive Super Rugby victory.

Moana Pasifika’s search for a first win of the season continues. Moana Pasifika’s lineout melted down in the second half and they were further disadvantaged by the sinbinning of the otherwise excellent wing Timoci Tavatavanawai for a high tackle on Mitch Hunt. In front of a small crowd, Moana missed only five tackles in the first half but too often they were guilty of conceding tries near their line, the Highlanders scoring through Pari Pari Parkinson and Sam Gilbert, before Moana re-took the lead thanks to powerhouse centre Levi Aumua’s try from a cut back close to the line.

Moana Pasifika travel to the Crusaders as their search for the first win of the campaign goes on. Coach Clarke Dermody will be particularly pleased with the performance of lock Max Hicks, who replaced Tucker after 26 minutes and grew as the game went on. However, de Groot stamped his class and power over the contest. However, the Highlanders will be happy with another strong finish as their bench provided huge impact. From the subsequent Highlanders scrum, de Groot won another set-piece penalty and the Highlanders got out of jail. *

The rest of the half resembled something of a ping-pong match. Gilbert converted his own to give the Highlanders its first lead of the game, 12-7. Mitch Hunt, who took the ball to the line beautifully, drew in a couple of defenders and popped it out to Sam Gilbert who charged through to score. But they were ill-disciplined early, coughing up ball in the first five minutes through a flurry of errors.

Highlanders keep winning streak going, but tougher test around the ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Analysis: The Highlanders got a win and a bonus point from their visit to Mt Smart Stadium, but they can't always rely on on a dominant scrum.

What they lacked in the scrums, they made up for with their lineouts, but it wasn’t enough. Just need to tidy up the scrums and play for 80 minutes though. At the start Aaron Mauger’s team played with confidence and patience. They went well and so too did the midfield backs Danny Toala and Levi Aumua. It was the Highlanders’ third win in a row, which is impressive. But at the beginning, it looked like it was Moana Pasifika, rather than the Highlanders who were on a winning streak.

Aaron Smith hasn't become the fifth New Zealander to play 350 first class games by luck believes Highlanders coach Clarke Dermody.

“The attack was outstanding, we found space, a lot of space. We’ve got to keep plugging away and squeeze as much as we can out of our boys. So it will be a good challenge the boys will get up for.” “It’s a testament to the work he does off the field. “It will be a good battle next week against the Hurricanes, because their scrum has been going well too. “We questioned that at halftime and the application in the second half was a lot better and being able to get double positive action was really important and not allowing Moana Pasifika in, because they’re dangerous with the ball in hand.”
