From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats - the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country - have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement. The Democrats have cheated countless times over the decades, including spying on my campaign, but weaponizing our justice system to punish a political opponent, who just so happens to be a President of the United States and by far the leading Republican candidate for President, has never happened before. The Justice Department has a longtime policy that it is likely unconstitutional to prosecute a sitting president in federal court. The district attorney in Atlanta has for two years been investigating efforts by Trump and his allies to meddle in Georgia’s 2020 vote count. The indictment, confirmed by Joe Tacopina, a lawyer for Trump, and other people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to discuss sealed criminal charges, is an extraordinary development after years of investigations into his business, political and personal dealings. Cohen pleaded guilty to those charges and unrelated tax evasion counts and served time in federal prison.

Defendants have to give up cellphones and some other personal items for safekeeping (and, in some cases, potential evidence), and lawyers generally aren't allowed to accompany their clients through the process. Weisselberg eventually pleaded guilty to dodging taxes on job perks including a free apartment and school tuition for his grandchildren. Doing so can smooth the process and strengthen arguments for bail by showing that they aren't evading the case. The person said the details of a surrender are still being worked out. Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury after a probe into hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels.

He testified that Trump directed him to make the payments. Trump in 2018 initially disputed knowing anything about the payment to Daniels. The grand jury also heard from David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer. A grand jury convened by Bragg in January began hearing evidence about Trump's role in the payment to Daniels days before the 2016 presidential election that he ended up winning. Some leading Republicans ahead of the indictment accused Bragg of selective prosecution with political motivations. He was acquitted by the Senate both times. Trump previously said he would continue campaigning for the Republican Party's nomination if charged with a crime. Cohen testified before the Manhattan grand jury investigating Trump on 13 March. Biden is expected to seek re-election. Trump will have to travel to Manhattan for fingerprinting and other processing at that point. Trump has denied having affairs with either woman. No former or sitting US president has ever faced criminal charges.

Your questions about the Trump indictment, answered (Politico)

The unprecedented indictment of former President Donald Trump plunges the legal system into murky waters. The Manhattan grand jury's decision to charge ...

A criminal tax case the Manhattan district attorney’s office filed against the Trump Organization in the same court in 2021 took about 15 months to get to trial. Trump also could seek to move the trial to a different courthouse elsewhere in New York state. It will, by necessity, take many months to commence a trial of a former president of the United States. Trump’s lawyers could try to move the case to federal court, arguing that at least some of the payments to Cohen took place while Trump was president and therefore a state court should have no authority to resolve the matter. A grand jury in Fulton County, Ga., is examining his bid to overturn the election results in that state, and at the federal level, special counsel Jack Smith is leading twin probes into Trump’s role in the Jan. And he could try to have the indictment dismissed or reduced. Another potential difficulty: Prosecutors may have to prove that Trump knew the arrangement was illegal. In this case, that second crime appears to be the use of the funds to advance Trump’s presidential campaign allegedly in violation of campaign finance laws. The case also dates to 2016 and 2017, so it is more than five years old. There’s no reason to think the indictment in Manhattan will influence the trajectory of several other probes that present an acute risk of more criminal charges for Trump. But based on publicly available information, legal experts have identified several features of the case that may present stumbling blocks as prosecutors seek a guilty verdict. Cohen said that Trump and his company concealed the purpose of the payments by falsely labeling them as legal expenses.

The relationship between the former president and the network had cooled but Fox offered a full-throated defence of Trump on Thursday night.

“The rule of law is suspended tonight,” Carlson announced gravely. From the start, he said, “Washington elites” had been working to stop Trump becoming president again. Fox News’ owner, Rupert Murdoch, said several of the network’s top stars “endorsed” Trump’s false claims, and later added: “I would have liked us to be stronger in denouncing it in hindsight,” according to a deposition in the case. his poll numbers have gone up with this and I just think this is gonna make sure he’s going to be on the ticket,” one commentator said in the moments after the news broke. Evidence put forward in that case revealed what many at the top of Fox truly think of Trump, driving a wedge between the former president and the network that helped to catapult him into the White House. After reporting for weeks that Trump’s indictment was imminent, the news – when it did arrive – seemed to take Fox’s panel of experts by surprise.

Former Vice President Mike Pence — who is debating his own 2024 challenge of Trump — called the indictment an “outrage” during a pre-scheduled interview with CNN. RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel called the news “a blatant abuse of power from a DA focused on political vengeance instead of keeping people safe.” And in a pre-recorded video message, GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called the indictment “wrong” and said the country was “skating on thin ice.” Unsatisfied with that Truth Social post, Trump deleted it and replaced it with another that went even further, not only suggesting without evidence DeSantis could be faced with allegations from not only a woman but a man, too, and that it could also come from someone “underage.” Both he and his advisers were blindsided by it, people close to the former president say. The effort underscores how Trump’s team believes it can turn the indictment into a campaign positive, at least in the short term. There will be more, advisers say: Trump’s team has convened a small army of lawyers and surrogates, who are set to pepper the airwaves in the coming days with campaign-approved talking points.

Donald Trump indictment: What happened today and what's next? (RNZ)

After days of intense speculation, it's finally happened: former US president Donald Trump has been indicted by a grand jury.

But they are threatened by Trump, which is why they're willing to turn us into a Banana Republic to stop him!— Donald Trump Jr. Given he has publicly maintained his innocence in the lead-up to this indictment, it appears more likely Trump will plead not guilty, which would mean the case proceeds to trial. Trump will then wait in a holding cell to be called before a judge to enter a plea in what's called an arraignment - which will be open to the public. He will enter a plea and the next stages of the court proceedings will be set. It's likely Trump will be released on his own recognisance, which means he will get bail without having to pay a bond. Once he is arraigned, the felony indictment will be unsealed - if it hasn't been already made public - and the charges against the former president will be laid out. Once Trump arrives at the New York court house, he will be processed as a defendant. Trump is currently residing at his sprawling Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, so as part of that process he will have to make his way to New York City. In the unlikely scenario that Trump refuses to cooperate with authorities and surrender, he may choose to hunker down at Mar-a-Lago. Our corrupt elites aren't threatened by violent criminals on the streets because all of them have private security. They don't care if normal people are being terrorized. He will be the first former president in US history to face criminal charges.

News of indictment catches Trump and his team off guard (The Guardian)

Sources say former president and aides thought prosecutors were reconsidering legal action and were taken by surprise by the announcement.

Trump later reimbursed Cohen with $35,000 checks, and Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal charges over the money. “This is fake news, and NBC is one of the worst. Though Trump had indicated that he expected to be one of the first people to be told if he was charged in the hush money case, the sources said, when the news actually arrived, Trump appears to have been one of the very last people to find out. It’s a fake investigation,” Trump said. But in private, Trump was more subdued as he took in the significance of becoming the first sitting or former president to be charged and the changed reality of operating under the threat of an eventual criminal trial, several sources close to him said. But that optimism proved to be misplaced when Trump was alerted at Mar-a-Lago to the indictment by his advisers, some of whom had decided to return to Washington after growing tired of waiting with him for several weeks for charges to materialize.

Reactions to Trump's indictment run the gamut, cynical to sublime (The Guardian)

Republicans line up to support ex-president as Democrats hope for more charges – and one man's one-word judgment.

Sebastian Gorka, a former Trump administration official, called for the former president’s supporters to “peacefully protest” against the indictment. “This is a time of sorting,” Gorka said on former Trump strategist Steve Bannon’s War Room broadcast. He framed the indictment as an abuse of power and part of a wider conspiracy pushed by his political opponents since he “came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower” to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2015. No one is above the law.” Nancy Pelosi, who presided over the House as speaker during both of Trump’s impeachments, said: “The grand jury has acted upon the facts and the law. There were also appeals for calm, after the president’s threat last week that an indictment could bring “possible death and destruction”. The White House declined to comment on the indictment of Biden’s predecessor and potential opponent in 2024. “And it appears for millions of Americans to be nothing more than a political prosecution.” Some Democrats welcomed, even celebrated, Trump’s reversal of fortune after decades of legal scrutiny and years of efforts to hold him accountable for a presidency that they say shattered democratic norms. “As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump,” McCarthy said. A spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed the indictment and said prosecutors were working with the president’s legal team to coordinate a surrender. For Democrats, Donald Trump’s indictment was proof that no one, not even a former president, was above the law.

'Annoying': Trump rivals hunker down for the indictment primary (Politico)

If there was ever room for a Republican critical of Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP field, it all but disappeared on Thursday night. Within a matter of hours ...

On Wednesday, he called a Trump donor to seek a meeting ahead of his planned campaign launch, according to a copy of the voicemail obtained by POLITICO. “Maybe someone would have the decency to not defend [Trump], or point out that this is a behavior that gives them concerns, but that’s asking a lot.” “You have to hold everyone to the rule of law,” Sununu said, “but clearly there’s been some hesitation on whether they could really find anybody guilty on this.” Especially not after the blowback DeSantis received by criticizing Trump on moral grounds, saying at a press conference last week he didn’t “know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star.” This person likened the indictment Thursday to news last year of the Supreme Court reaching a decision in the Dobbs case: “There was a big surprise when this came down, but you’ve been lying in wait, expecting it for a little bit.” Chris Sununu, who’s called for the party to move on from Trump in 2024 but said he would still support him if he’s the nominee, wouldn’t distance himself too much from the former president in an interview with POLITICO last week. Second, probably most importantly, it just completely sucks the oxygen out of the room.” Every court proceeding, every new twist in the case will represent a litmus test other candidates in the field will either pass or fail. As Pence had it: “outrageous.” “Beyond belief,” “It rallies the base—there’s this rally around the flag effect for Trump. Ron DeSantis](https://www.politico.com/news/2023/03/30/desantis-trump-indictment-00089865), Trump’s most prominent Republican opponent, came to heel, pledging to refuse any extradition request ahead of what is expected to be Trump’s likely surrender next week. [Fox News](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/mar/31/donald-trump-indicted-reaction-how-fox-news-reported-indictment), rallied to his defense.

'Karma': Will Trump get presumption of innocence five boys in ... (USA TODAY)

Donald Trump called for the death penalty in his case. Then he was exonerated. I talked to him about why this week's indictment feels like karma.

"This could be a new time – the era of justice." "It seems like there is no justice, but there's a sliver of it there, the opportunity for there to be a justice system that works for all people, one with the same equity that we've been crying out for. I believe Salaam and those four other men might like to have a word with him about that. The city awarded the men $41 million in 2014, a decade after some of them sued for violation of civil rights. It was an early form of Trump rhetoric, and it helped fuel the public outcry that thirsted for a conviction in the case. He will never be able to separate himself from his time in prison, but he feels empowered to help others avoid a similar experience. "We live in a system where the justice system seems like there is no justice when it comes to Black and brown bodies," Salaam told me. "To truly be able to mount the proper defense that has eluded so many of us." New York had not held an execution in decades, but the five boys were indeed convicted, and they served. "They must serve as examples so that others will think long and hard before committing a crime or an act of violence." The men's names weren't cleared until 2002, after convicted murderer Matias Reyes confessed to the assault. But he isn't thinking about it as a feel-good moment.
