Black Caps v Sri Lanka: New Zealand fall in super over after Ish ... (New Zealand Herald)

Ish Sodhi blasted a six from the final ball, but Sri Lanka responded to edge a thriller.

But Chapman’s (33 off 22) stay ended in the 15th over, holing out from Hasaranga, and the equation stood at 59 needed from the final 30 balls. Sri Lanka started with the offspin of Theekshana and found immediate success, with Tim Seifert trapped for a three-ball duck. That ended a 63-run stand from 39 balls as the Black Caps progressed to 81-3 after 10 overs, leaving them needing another 116 from the next 10. Sri Lanka reached 99-3 at the halfway mark and Asalanka registered a half-century from 32 balls, putting his side in position to launch in the death overs. There was no sign of the run-fest to follow when Milne found swing and nicked out Pathum Nissanka from the first ball of the innings — not that he knew much about it. Neesham followed the trend of striking in his first over, inducing a false shot from Dhananjaya de Silva, but that initiated the key stand.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first in Auckland, with Sri Lanka registering 5-196 from their 20 overs. It was the shortest successful Super Over chase in men’s T20I history, with Kiwi seamer Adam Milne the luckless bowler. We were probably just a fraction full, and we have to work on that and hit just back of a length, going into Dunedin where it‘s a slightly smaller ground as well. It was Sri Lanka’s first victory on New Zealand soil in any format since 2015. New to Kayo? Watch Sri Lanka‘s Tour of New Zealand.

The third match – and the final fixture of New Zealand’s home summer – then takes place in Queenstown on Saturday. Had he not, the tie after 20 overs might well have become a loss. As the bails lit up and went flying, New Zealand found themselves in an almighty hole. Mendis began Sri Lanka’s batting turn with a single off Milne, before Asalanka cleared the rope by just enough to prevent Chapman from pulling off a spectacular catch. *

Black Caps fans anxiously await news on Kane Williamson's IPL ... (Stuff.co.nz)

ANALYSIS: The star NZ batter may be in a race against time to recover and lead the side at this year's World Cup.

A partially torn ACL can sometimes be treated without surgery, with a rest and rehabilitation period of about three months. Last August, Trent Boult became the first Black Cap to opt out of his yearly contract, wishing to spend less time away from home and his wife and three young children. He also suffered an elbow injury which ruled him out for four months last summer, which could limit his throwing arm. Since then, the left-arm pace bowler has played for NZ in the T20 World Cup in Australia in November, but was not part of the squad for any of the six tests from December to March and played in the Big Bash League in Australia and the new domestic T20 league in the UAE. With a one-day World Cup to be contested in India in October-November, some of the country’s cricket fans would rather see Williamson – and the likes of Tim Southee and Devon Conway – playing for the Black Caps ODI team. Williamson – along with a string of star performers for the national side – was given permission from New Zealand Cricket to play in the 2023 IPL, instead of turning out for the Black Caps against Sri Lanka in the one-day and T20 series at home, and the white-ball away series versus Pakistan later this month.
