Chelsea 0-2 Aston Villa: Villans heap pressure on Chelsea manager ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

In-form Ollie Watkins was on target and John McGinn struck a screamer as Aston Villa leapfrogged Chelsea into the top half of the Premier League.

Indeed, only Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United can boast to have a similar overall tally of top-flight points as Villa since Emery’s arrival. James fizzes a half-cleared corner back into the middle. It says much about Emery’s impact that they have gone from looking nervously at the Premier League trapdoor to assessing how many teams they could reel in on their rise up the table. Not a bad week’s work for the Scotland midfielder. There will no doubt be more murmurs about Potter’s position as coach and the under-achievements of Chelsea, but that’s pretty much inevitable given the Blues’ current circumstances – and has all been said before - so let’s shine a spotlight on the positives for Villa. Chelsea are three points further back and drop to 11th.

Chelsea down to 11th after Villa defeat; spotlight on Potter (The Washington Post)

Chelsea's mini-revival looks to be over after a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa put the focus back on manager Graham Potter.

But this was the latest setback for Potter, who has struggled to get the Londoners’ season on track since he was hired in September. He had already hit the bar in the first half and doubled Villa’s lead with a powerful effort from outside the box. Joao Felix forced a good save from Emiliano Martinez and Mykhailo Mudryk failed to beat the Villa goalkeeper with another effort.

Ever since Arsenal beat them 4-1 back on December 11th, they have been a hard nut to crack; they have been unbeaten in the WSL ever since. the villains are definitely a team to watch! on 26th January this year, Aston Villa are still very much in the running for the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, having qualified for the semi-finals after beating Manchester City 2-1. A few weeks ago, Liverpool women’s coach Matt Beard admitted that there are two distinct groups of teams in the WSL: the top 4 teams (the two Manchester sides, Chelsea, and Arsenal) who are top teams with too much quality, and the rest. The Villains have it in them to break into the WSL’s top four. There is no separating the WSL top 4, and next season, one can argue it will just be the same, but will it be?

'I take responsibility' - Chelsea boss Potter (BBC Sport)

Graham Potter accepts responsibility for Chelsea failings but former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink supports him.

But when creating that many chances, it is hard to take." "For Chelsea it is very difficult to score goals. "You have made a decision to buy young players but you have to give them time to make mistakes. He needs to work on it and needs the time. It is a results business." "After a defeat there is always a disappointment," Potter told Match of the Day. It is a problem in the final third, Chelsea don't get enough people in the box. You have to stick with him because you are going that way. "He has cost a lot of money but has had just a few months in this country. "I don't like to blame anybody, I have to take responsibility. We need to respond, that's clear. Against Aston Villa, they had 27 shots, with eight on target, and 69% of the possession.

Potter tipped for sack at Chelsea with Nagelsmann call to be made (Football.London)

Chelsea news: The Blues suffered another damaging defeat as Graham Potter finds himself under pressure once more.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Chelsea dropped out of the top 10 with a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday evening, which will only add even more pressure on Graham Potter’s job. Mauricio Pochettino is still the favourite but former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has moved into second spot with Zinedine Zidane further back at 6/1. Though he is still not the favourite to go next, with Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes both deemed more likely, it is a big move from how he started the day. Supporters at the stadium once more let their frustration be known, booing the side off at the break and at full-time, even with a large portion having already left. Potter has already been under immense pressure at Chelsea but had briefly settled things with a run of three successive wins before the international break. In any case, Graham Potter did not take the chance of venturing onto the pitch at full time. Villa dealt them a 10th league defeat of the season; the most they have lost in a single campaign this century is 12. The mask had slipped a few minutes earlier though.

Not long after it appeared Chelsea had turned a corner, they have quickly found themselves back in a place they hoped they had seen the last of.

Only victories will now keep the critics at bay. The longer this game went on, though, the quality and frequency of their openings did decrease and this developed into an evening when it felt that no matter how long it went on, Chelsea would not score. Their backing of Potter remained intact. They still have the Champions League to play for and have reached the last eight and another knockout meeting with Real Madrid, steered to that stage by Potter. How long that lasts remains to be seen, though, and it did not stop the rumblings about the safety of Potter’s position and growing feeling that this situation cannot be allowed to go on for too much longer. Nagelsmann was expected to be out of reach for the rest of Europe’s elite clubs for some time after joining Bayern Munich on a five-year deal that was due to run until 2026.
