They have the second easiest stretch of games to finish the season. Roger Schmidt’s side have a tie against Inter Milan in the quarter-final of the Champions League that they will feel they can win. Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in nine games this season and the punishment did not end there for the visitors. If City's first two goals were the fruit of collective brilliance, Liverpool's defending for the third summed up a miserable season for Klopp's men. Alvarez was the creator this time as his cross-field pass freed Mahrez to race into acres of space behind the Liverpool defence. Despite the absence of their 42-goal striker, Pep Guardiola's men made a positive start as Alisson Becker was forced into saves from Gundogan and Rodri before Riyad Mahrez fired a free-kick inches wide. A chastening defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp's men still seven points adrift of the top four down in sixth. 73 min Bruno robs Bruno on the halfway line and Newcastle break. He miscontrols the ball but recovers to rattle a shot that is crucially blocked by Botman. Antony is a little unfortunate to come off – and pretty aggrieved – as he’s been United’s liveliest attacker by far, but I suppose it was him or Rashford. Newcastle break and Gordon drives a dangerous low cross that is turned behind by Dalot. Martial was on the line and may have helped to force the ball against the post and away. It was a great performance and we’re glad to get the win and the clean sheet. De Gea pushes it against the underside of the bar, an outrageous reaction save, and then Schar heads the rebound against the post! Newcastle will be kicking themselves for not taking the lead in that half. It's easy me seeing that, we've got a group of players who can deliver that. They can't complain about leaving the North East pointless and now sit just one point ahead of fifth-place Tottenham, albeit with a game in hand. United appear to have weathered the storm and have slowed the game down in the past few minutes. Nice play from Sabitzer and Antony on the right but Newcastle clear the ball well and almost start a counter. It's a lovely run from Saint-Maximin and he puts in a delicious into the box for Willock, but he blasts it well over the bar from close range. Excellent cross from Newcastle down the right wing and the ball comes in for Isak. It only results in a corner but Saint-Maximin is growing in the game and could be dangerous. United have whipped a couple of dangerous balls into the box in the last few minutes and looked a bit more threatening. Martial takes a nice first touch in the box and curls a shot towards the Newcastle goal. Burn gets a touch to knock it behind for a corner, but it looked a dangerous shot from the Frenchman. Tripper whips in a really good free kick from just in front of the corner flag, and Wilson rises to head home from close range.

Newcastle's third successive league win -- and their first against United since 2019 -- took them above their fourth placed opponents on goal difference. West Ham are just one point above the relegation zone, but they have a little breathing space thanks to their first win in three league games. Yet, in the midst of a superb personal campaign, this was a rare dud for Rashford and United looked toothless as a result. United's first major trophy in six years was supposed to be the start of a new golden era, but instead they have failed to score in three successive league matches for the first time since February 2020. United are without a win in their last three league games, thrashed 7-0 at Liverpool and then held to a goalless draw by lowly Southampton before this setback on Tyneside. Newcastle avenged their League Cup final loss against Manchester United as Joe Willock and Callum Wilson clinched a 2-0 win that lifted the Magpies into third place in the Premier League on Sunday.

Chelsea, Leicester fire Premier League managers after weekend ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Graham Potter shown the door at Chelsea after six months on the same day Brendan Rodgers leaves Leicester after four years.

Leicester actually made a profit of about $US65 million ($NZ104 million) in that window. “The task ahead of us in our final 10 games is clear,” Srivaddhanaprabha said. But Leicester's players were no longer responding to Rodgers and there was no sign of an improvement in performance levels. The same two managers would likely be on a short list of options for Tottenham, who are also searching for a permanent manager after firing Antonio Conte last weekend. “He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.” The American ownership's first managerial appointment ultimately backfired. * In a long statement, Srivaddhanaprabha said Rodgers gave Leicester “some of our finest footballing moments” and, off the field, “embraced the culture of the club and helped cultivate an outstanding developmental environment.” Leicester's leadership took the decision with a heavy heart, hailing Rodgers as “one of the most successful managers in the club’s history" while – in the same statement announcing his departure – saying it was a necessary move if the team was to stay in England's lucrative top division. Potter tried a back four and a back five, wingers as wing backs and full backs as center backs, all while trying to implement his own style and under the glare and pressure of working at one of the most talked-about clubs in soccer. Potter was brought in from Brighton on a five-year deal despite his lack of experience coaching at soccer’s biggest clubs – in a somewhat obscure coaching past, the only trophy he'd won was the Swedish Cup in 2017 – and he failed to get the best out of an expensively assembled squad. Chelsea ran out of patience with Graham Potter on Sunday, firing the English manager with the club languishing in the middle of the Premier League standings despite a spending spree on new players totaling $630 million across the last two transfer windows.

The result boosted their survival hopes after a 12-match winless league run cost Patrick Vieira his job. With visits to Liverpool, City and Newcastle United looming it is still too early for Arsenal fans to start preparing the celebrations. Hodgson could have opted for the easy life tending the garden or opting for punditry but clearly still has his magic touch and Palace fans will be resting more easy with the old master back at the helm in their bid to reach safety. They will have to find a better way of dealing with his absence if they are not to jeopardise their chance of finishing in the top four. Mohamed Salah scored in the first half, but Liverpool unravelled after the break en route to their ninth Premier League defeat of the season, casting more doubt on their hopes of a top-four finish with the gap now eight points. Premier League clubs have ushered in a golden era of back-post ... (The Athletic)

There's been a notable increase in Premier League teams scoring back-post goals. We look at who does it best, and how.

Expect to see some more back-post finishes as the Premier League season reaches its endgame. That might not sound hugely notable, but it is statistically significant — meaning this change is unlikely due to chance. For example, against Brentford, Mitrovic is strolling back onside as Harrison Reed recycles possession to right-back Kevin Mbabu, with Brentford holding a tight four-man defensive line. While their raw number of 16 back-post chances is not extravagantly high, it is interesting to see that Thomas Frank plays to a clear strength within his squad — transferring their set-piece aerial threat into dangerous sequences in open play via back-post crosses. “But [Thomas Frank] spoke to me and said just anticipate where the ball is going to be and where I should be. Keeping too much width can allow the attacker to expose the gap between full-back and centre-back — as shown below. If you’ve seen the majority of my goals, they are back-post tap-ins.” Often, the gift is provided by the defending team. “That advice was key and I took that on board. A club who are similarly known for their set-piece threat are Fulham, who also continue to play to their strengths in open play — with the 10 per cent of their chances created via back-post finishes being the third highest in the league. Just look at his finish against Manchester United earlier this season. Moyes is breathing a little easier, albeit with his side only a point above the drop zone, but they can put further daylight between themselves and the bottom three at home to Newcastle on Wednesday. For all the money spent and wages paid, Ten Hag is dealing with a deficiency at the top of the pitch. A reminder that Fernandes was the one wearing the armband… One suspects Erik ten Hag is aware of this and will address it in the summer. Weghorst's only effort was a missed attempt on the angle where the idea and the execution seemed off. He mustered only 10 touches of the ball in the match, completing just four passes.
