How Team Penske's Josef Newgarden Once Again Came Up Big on ... (Autoweek)

Team Penske driver goes back-to-back on the big oval at Texas Motor Speedway.

… Jack Harvey was back behind the wheel after suffering a concussion in a wreck in the season-opening race last month at St. And none of us were in the window at all, and for a team like us, that’s totally unacceptable.” • Rookie Sting Ray Robb had a hard hit on Lap 212. “It was really a shame for us.” The Japanese driver is competing only in oval races for CGR this year, including the Indianapolis 500, of which he’s a two-time winner. I was having a blast, it was so much fun.” In a sense, though, Rossi got some vindication as Kirkwood exited the race on lap 98 of the 250-lap event with rear mechanical failure that was unrecoverable from. Rossi was able to get back on-track, but not before extensive work had to be done on his car, including a new front wing and front suspension parts. I’m very proud of the effort we had and the work we’ve done.” Sunday, Newgarden was battling O’Ward, trying to hold him off for a last lap burst, when Grosjean lost control of his car on the white flag lap, sealing the victory under caution for Newgarden. “It’s been a hell of a start to the year,” O’Ward said. When we needed to be good, the car was there at the end.

The race will go down in history as one of IndyCar's classics at the oval after an intense, race-long tuss...

O'Ward was second while Palou completed the podium. The race restarted with 31 laps to go. He and O'Ward ran side-by-side, lap after lap, neither giving the other an inch. Palou led briefly before Newgarden resumed his customary spot at the head of the field. Then a vicious crash for Sting Ray Robb brought the action to a halt. Initially, it was McLaren's Felix Rosenqvist who led the field to the green flag. He managed to escape uninjured, albeit with a bruised ego. Newgarden led at the time of the yellow and duly took the chequered flag under control of the safety car. O'Ward was challenged by Newgarden and Palou and soon enough Andretti Autosport's Colton Herta made his way into the picture and to the lead with 47 laps to go. That drew the safety car onto the track and the field to the pit lane for their first round of pit stops. The first few minutes of the race were frenetic as Newgarden rose to the head of the field while Rosenqvist fell down the order. With the yellow flag out, the brilliant battle for the lead between Team Penske's Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward of McLaren was brought to a premature end.

Josef Newgarden edges Pato O'Ward at Texas in classic IndyCar ... (The Indianapolis Star)

Pato O'Ward was running away from the rest of the field with 100 laps to go at Texas. Then, chaos ensues and Josef Newgarden emerges the victor.

O’Ward was narrowly scored the leader of the race with two to go on the outside of Newgarden before the No. The race went back to green on Lap 193, with Palou soon charging into the lead and O’Ward drifting quickly back to fourth. Newgarden took hold of the lead with nine laps to go and virtually never let it go. That meant that O’Ward’s massive advantage and ability to cruise full-tilt to the end was gone. I guess we’ve had two second-place finishes and we’re still waiting for the win, but a great start to the championship. Very difficult to get away, but when we needed to get good, the car was great at the end.”

Texas IndyCar: Newgarden wins thriller over O'Ward (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Polesitter Felix Rosenqvist didn't last a lap in the front, the Arrow McLaren losing out to Scott Dixon's Ganassi entry at the end of the first lap, ...

Most of the field stopped again to eliminate fuel worries, but Palou stayed out ahead of Grosjean, Herta and Dixon. However, Herta too had ceded the lead to Palou by the time the yellow flew for Sting Ray Robb striking the wall at Turn 2 and then bouncing back across the track to take a front-left impact on the inside wall. Under the ensuing yellow, O’Ward and Newgarden pitted as soon as the pits opened, and they now had 68 laps to try and get to the finish. [Colton Herta](https://www.motorsport.com/driver/colton-herta/20391/). Behind Herta, Rosenqvist – who made his third stop late – came out in eighth, ahead of the delayed McLaughlin, but the #6 Arrow McLaren went high through Turn 3 and drifted up into the wall at Turn 4. By Lap 28, the third Penske, that of [Scott McLaughlin](https://www.motorsport.com/driver/scott-mclaughlin/18844/), was up to 13th. McLaughlin and Malukas pitted from the top 10, but McLaughlin ran long so his stop was delayed. In sixth, Herta had gotten the better of McLaughlin who was followed by Malukas, Rosenqvist and Ericsson. O’Ward started cutting into Newgarden’s advantage, immediately after their stops, however, and from Lap 125, the halfway point of the race, the Penske driver was only half a second ahead. The Lap 60 restart saw Newgarden appear to make a break, but Palou jumped O’Ward and was swiftly onto Newgarden’s tail. Newgarden and Dixon swapped the lead twice before Newgarden moved to the head of the field and eked out a small gap. As they hit traffic, Newgarden’s advantage was slashed but by Lap 40 the gap was back out to 1.5sec.

After a dismal turnout that barely cracked four figures last year, Faber confirmed that attendance had increased by a double-digit percentage (without having the final numbers). “For us to find the tire and downforce level is really hard. Now the question becomes whether the series gets to keep it – and that won’t be answered until this fall at the earliest. Just like the Cup Series at Daytona and Talladega, the racing always worked on a fine line in the halcyon days off Texas. “Where we go from here, it’s hard to say. It felt packed up for most of the race and definitely at the end. Said Helio Castroneves, a four-time winner during the glory days of the Fort Worth track in the mid-2000s: “I hope the fans enjoyed it. Any more (downforce), and it’s just a shitty pack race.

Sunday was one of IndyCar's best oval races in years, but will it get ... (The Indianapolis Star)

After a series of relatively dull races at the oval, Josef Newgarden won a thrilling IndyCar race then cautioned what against nearing pack racing.

That day, Ryan Briscoe was collected in the effects of a three-wide battle between Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Sage Karam with two laps to go in a race that featured an eye-popping 80 official lead changes. And four years later, some outspoken veterans of the sport had had enough. I had had a big gap, and (Pato) just snuck up on me and then was walking away,” Newgarden said. For Indy cars and their Firestone rubber, however, the second lane was like running on ice. One more crash between Rahal and Devlin DeFrancesco compressed the field down the stretch, creating essentially a 12-lap race that ended prematurely with Grosjean’s trip into the Turn 2 wall with less than two laps remaining. Said O’Ward of his late-race dueling with a driver he’s finished 1-2 with in some form seven times since the start of 2020: “We were going wheel-to-wheel at, like, 226 mph. At that point, the battle was Newgarden’s to lose. Its next job will be to package and roll it off the shelf for years to come. But because of those accidents, race fans saw the field packed up and all bets were off. Will Tuesday’s TV ratings report properly tell the tale of Josef Newgarden holding off a stubborn, hard-charging Pato O’Ward, the slew of heavy crashes and key strategy calls that constantly changed the course of the race in its final hour? The IndyCar community, for better or worse, is a fickle place.

Winners and losers from IndyCar's thrilling Texas race - The Race (The Race)

Hard work to improve the IndyCar racing spectacle paid off at Texas as Josef Newgarden fought Pato O'Ward for victory in a frenetic affair.

“Fortunately the handling was OK and the entire team did a great job extracting the best out of the car.” He’s 24th in the points after being taken out on lap one in St Pete. Grosjean was rapid throughout and had no trouble making third his own in the middle stint of the race. He was promoted a place by Grosjean’s crash but still had a first strong oval finish in a while in seventh. He qualified in the top 10 and was there all day until a team error meant he stayed out under caution when he needed to pit. “It got taken away from us in the first stop to no fault of our own,” said Rossi. What a performance the drivers were able to put on in Texas. The fact his race lasted just 46 laps then was far from ideal. But Meyer Shank struggled with its car this time, and Pagenaud could only finish 17th. He qualified third but speared Kyle Kirkwood in the pits. Malukas is proving that doesn’t have to be the case. Kirkwood was in the fast lane so Rossi’s crew can’t have known Kirkwood was pitting, but IndyCar gave Rossi a drive-through after damage had put him six laps down anyway.
