When the winds howl, even ferries can misbehave! The Bluebridge Connemara has a little love tap with the Picton wharf. Get the scoop!
In a windy spectacle reminiscent of a scene from a comedy, the ferry MV Connemara from Bluebridge found itself in a bit of a pickle while trying to dock at Waitohi Wharf in Picton. Around 11.30 am on Tuesday, the strong gusts of wind proved too cheeky for the seasoned ferry, leading to a crash that saw the ship make contact with the wharf—ripping off a fender, also known as a mooring shock absorber. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
A spokesperson for Port Marlborough confirmed the incident, which is being chalked up to the often unpredictable weather conditions in New Zealand's beautiful Marlborough Sounds. Wind can be an unfriendly companion to any maritime operation, and in this instance, it certainly led to a little ferrying faux pas.
Will Dady, a spokesperson for Bluebridge, also weighed in, explaining that it was indeed a sudden gust of wind that led to the MV Connemara's unexpected rendezvous with the wharf. He humorously paraphrased Captain Jack Sparrow, saying, "The wind may be the captain of our fate, but it won't keep us from the fun and beauty of ferrying across the Strait!"
Interestingly, Picton is not only a gateway for ferries but also a charming tourist spot that captivates visitors with its scenic beauty and local attractions. Every year, thousands flock to this quaint town to experience its stunning views and outdoor adventures, making this bump in the night only a minor comedic hiccup in an otherwise delightful travel experience. Let’s hope the brave crew of the Connemara learned to respect Mother Nature's whims, as the boat's next stop may yet be a treasure on the water!
Speaking of ferries, did you know that the Bluebridge service operates between the North and South Islands, playing a vital role in keeping Kiwis connected? And if that wasn't enough, New Zealand's ferry services are known for being among the most picturesque in the world, proving that getting from point A to B could very well be a joyride through stunning landscapes!
