Discover what's happening this Waitangi Day 2025, from speeches and celebrations to the quirky school attendance stats that keep us guessing!
Waitangi Day 2025 is upon us, and this year promises to be a spectacular celebration of our shared history and culture. Representatives from the Kiingitanga, including the newly appointed monarch Te Arikinui Nga wai hono I te po, will kick off the festivities with a warm welcome at the Treaty Grounds. The excitement is palpable as Kaumatua and other leaders gather to deliver powerful speeches that reflect on our past and inspire future generations. This year’s theme is all about “weaving our future together,” as highlighted by Hamilton City Council’s special festival program. Expect some delightful performances and activities that celebrate our unique heritage!
The day is not just about speakers and speeches, though. From dawn till dusk, events are scattered across the country, including the highly anticipated live broadcast from the Treaty Grounds starting at 5 AM with Peter-Lucas Jones and Blake Ihimaera, who will host WAITANGI 2025 - KA HAO TE RANGATAHI. For those who prefer swimming with history, the iconic Flannagan Cup at Ngamotu Beach has been a staple since 1916, proving that a splash in the ocean can unite us in celebration.
However, while we relish the festivities, schools often face a curious challenge around Waitangi Day. Historically, attendance tends to dwindle between this public holiday and the weekend. An education leader pointed out that schools have ‘‘abysmal attendance’’ during these times, causing some lighthearted debate among educators and parents. It seems that with so much excitement afoot, kids might prioritize festivities over the classroom!
As the celebrations continue, let’s not forget the military contributions to Waitangi Day. The RNZN will pay their respects, with Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Garin Golding leading a large contingent of Navy personnel. Their presence is a crucial reminder of the story we’re all a part of, blending past and present while adding a maritime twist to our festivities.
